Masters of Illusion
Hosted by Franz Harary, Masters of Illusion XVII was shown on NBC at 11am on Saturday, April 29. Here are my notes and comments.
Bob Borgia Illusions
Bob Borgia is welcomed first. A girl goes in some sheets and then she is replaced by Bob Borgia. Borgia's head moves all around and appears to be separated from his hands in his first illusion. Borgia explains that he loses cards in this illusion. He asks everyone in the audience to stand up. Borgia shows 6 cards including 5 of hearts and 8 of clubs. He asks everyone to concentrate on one card. He now shows cards including 5 of spades and 8 of spades. This is a common illusion. None of the cards are the same as the first 6 cards but people don't know that. Not a good illusion for the show to begin with, this illusion is all over the internet and everybody knows how it works.
Jim Bentley Illusions
Bentley immitates The Milk Can Escape that Houdini performed. Bentley sits in the milk can, his hands are chained. Bentley goes under the water and the milk can is closed and locked. Curtains go around the milk can, the clock shows that 30 seconds have passed. The clock shows 45 seconds and no sign of Bentley. The clock approaches 1 minute and Bentley cannot be seen. The clock approaches 80 seconds and finally Bentley jumps out.
Mark Kornhauser Illusions
Kornhauser grabs the mic and we can see that one arm appears to be longer than the other. He jokes that this happened when he held the door open for a woman. Kornhauser asks for requests as he pulls the violin out. Kornhauser then appears to play the violin with his face.
Franz Harary Illusions
Harary talks about the space shuttle and then shows the rocket for his illusion.
Harary gets in a structure and the rocket is pointed at him. The rocket appears to go into the structure but when the doors open Harary appears instead.
Juliana Chen Illusions
Juliana dances with playing cards in her right hand and then her left hand. The cards start out as fans. Next confetti comes down where she had the cards. Next she has the card fan again. Her hand appears to be empty and then she shows cards again. Chen continually produces card and then drops them, alternating with each hand.
Max Maven Illusions
Max Maven shows a simple line of poetry,
Mary
had a
a little
lamb.
He asks the audience to read it outloud. He points out that the word a is repeated.
Aldo Colombini Illusions
Raquel tries to cut the rope but the scissors are broken. Miguel tries to cut the scissors but the scissors have 2 pairs connected. Miguel is told to tie the end of the rope but it is gone. Colombini appears to put the ends of the ropes back. Colombini appears to make a knot in the rope vanish in his mouth. He then slides the knot until it is gone. Colombini brings out a rainbow handkerchief. Colombini makes the handkerchief come off the rope. Red, blue and yellow balloons are shown to Miguel. He chooses blue. Colombini blows up the yellow balloon. Cards are shown and he says he studied this trick for months. Miguel says stop and shows the 5 of clubs. Miguel puts the card back. Colombini pops the balloon and we see the 5 of clubs.
Max Maven Illusions
Max Maven says you have something to write with and paper. He says to make sure you have 3 pieces of paper or one piece torn in 3. Piece A has 1 on front and 2 on back. Piece B has 3 on front and 4 on back. Piece C has 5 on front and 6 on back. We then position them with 2 on the left, 4 in the center and 6 on the right.
We mix the positions. Turn center over. In my case I switched the 4 and the 6 so that the 6 is now in the center and when turned over it shows the 5. He tells us to add the 3 numbers and I get 2+5+4 or 11. Song 11 on the list is Jingle Bells. He tells us to hum the song. We then hear music that is the ending of Jingle Bells. This trick is easy when you look at the math. Without turning any numbers over our total is 2+4+6 or 12. We know that no matter which piece of paper we turn over, it will decrease this amount by 1 to give us 11. Therefore it doesn't matter which piece of paper is in the center when we change the order, our total will still be 11.
Bob Borgia Illusions
Borgia talks about seeing something in the sky in Pennsylvania when he was 12.
Borgia has a bowling ball type object. It appears to move on its own and then disappear. It appears to come back. It seems to float upwards. We see an alien mask.
Franz Harary Illusions
Cellophane is wrapped around Harary, 100 feet worth.
There is no guarantee that the fuse will actually last 90 seconds.
Harary is wearing camera 1.
Harary's feet appeared to be chained.
Supposedly he'll be hurt by the explosion if he doesn't escape.
Harary struggles but his hands appear to come free early.
Harary appears to lie down and then roll around.
Harary appears to pull the collophane off his body.
We appear to see Harary run out moments before the explosion goes off.
The slow motion challenge is the production of the cards by Juliana Chen.
