    MJM Magic

    Jay Sankey

Wow the audience. Jay Sankey believes that tricks are most valuable when they impress the audience. Some magicians forget this important point. He extends this to the students too. This is why Homki said the following in his Paperclipped review:
He's funny, intelligent, and just plain fun to watch. I sometimes pull out the DVD just to watch him teach.

    Jay Sankey Interview

    Published October 6, 2005

    Eric Sprague:
    1. One of our members reviewed your Paperclipped DVD and he described you as the"best teacher of magic I have seen to date." Being both a magician and a teacher, why do you think it is that some magicians have difficulty being good teachers?

    Jay Sankey:
They are too often focused on the method rather than the effect on the spectator. Equally as crippling, they think of method in the most narrow terms, i.e. the brute mechanics. Method is so much more than that. The presentation is the method. Your performance character is the method. Your rapport with the audience is the method. Even a spectator's character and attitude (which you can incorporate into an effect) is the method.

    Eric Sprague:
    2. Many of our members are interested in card tricks. If you had to choose, which would you recommend for card enthusiasts, the Revolutionary Card Magic DVD or the The Very Best of Jay Sankey DVD?

    Jay Sankey:
I wouldn't hesitate to recommend my recently released GREATEST HITS. All the really good stuff from the VERY BEST without the padding and crappier tricks. Plus 10 new effects. Plus bonus material featuring clips spanning more than 20 years of my career. (Hate to sound like a darn ad, but you DID ask!)

    Eric Sprague:
    3. We know you became interested in magic at the age of 12. What were the key steps in progressing from interest to becoming a top magician?

    Jay Sankey:
I spent the first 10 years reading everything. Everything. All the while I was practicing for at least a few hours every day. I was also gigging all the time from about the age of 15-16. Kid shows. Restaurants. Private parties. I'd take any gig that came up. I also started keeping notes and creating stuff from almost the very beginning. That combination of practice, performance and creating got me where I am today. Wherever the heck that is.

    Eric Sprague:
    4. How did you get started in stand-up comedy?

    Jay Sankey:
At magic gigs people would also say, "You're so funny. You should do stand-up." For years I ignored the suggestions, then when I was in my late 20's I thought, "What the heck." I climbed on stage with a short list of some weird jokes and bombed. And pretty much kept bombing for months, but slowly I got the hang of it.

    Eric Sprague:
    5. Are you able to incorporate magic into your stand-up comedy routines?

    Jay Sankey:
I can, but it doesn't feel right. And I don't do any stand-up comedy any more. Quit a few years ago. Careerwise I had gone as far as I could go in Canada and I didn't want to make the jump to LA with having kids on the horizon, so I let it go and have never once, not even for a moment, missed it. I get plenty of other opportunities to perform.

    Eric Sprague:
    6. You mentioned on AnnOnline that your first night as a stand-up comic was difficult yet you stuck with it. What made you continue in spite of the hardships?

    Jay Sankey:
The desire to get good at something I sucked at. I don't like being crappy at something. I don't like even being "so so. I'm driven to become at least "pretty good" at anything I try.

    Eric Sprague:
    7. Do you think your good teaching and communication methods from your magic DVDs have helped you to connect with audiences in your comedy routines?

    Jay Sankey:
Probably. It's really all about connection. Communication. Being able to read people, knowing what you want to say, and knowing how to say it. Magic, music, stand-up, whatever it is, the rest is just technical.

    Eric Sprague:
    8. What do you think is the easiest card trick you teach? The most difficult?

    Jay Sankey:
The Turnover Card (you know, where the deck starts with a card reversed on the bottom.) And the toughest would be Collect-Me-Not with that darn Revolution Count. The timing on that count ain't much fun to get down.

    Eric Sprague:
    9. Are you working on new material? What it is, and when it will be released?

    Jay Sankey:
Oh yeah. I always have a dozen different projects on the go. Dvds. Books. Other products. It's all connected. A single creative storm. Just trying to find my way through it! But rest assured, I've got big plans. Big plans. The next release is RAZOR'S EDGE. A borrowed and marked coin is skewered with either a playing card or your own business card, and then the coin is "healed." Best of all, both the coin and the card can be handed out and even given away! It's crazy...

    Eric Sprague:
    10. Are you going to the F.I.S.M 2006 in Stockholm, Sweden?

    Jay Sankey:
I doubt it. Unless I'm booked to work a convention, I seldom go. Just too busy with a ton of other stuff, especially my wife Lisa and son Mason. I used to imagine that without magic I'd be lost. But now I feel that without Lisa and Mason I'd be gutted. Without a compass. Insane. And we have another baby due in January. I'm the luckiest guy I know.

    Eric Sprague:
    11. If you had to choose a favorite coin trick/card trick what would it be?

    Jay Sankey:
I love Holy Moly. I also love In A Flash, Card to Pocket, Ambitious Card, Paperclipped, Gemini Pouch, a simple double-lift change, Mr. Clean Coins Across, Signed Singed + Delivered, etc.

    Eric Sprague:
    12. Not including yourself, which magician do you like the most? (style, performance, inspiration)

    Jay Sankey:
I'm inspired by my friends, guys like Richard Sanders, Mike Skutt and David Acer.

    Eric Sprague:
    13. Which profession would you like if you were not doing magic, comedy and writing?

    Jay Sankey:
Without a doubt, music. I don't play an instrument, but I've dabbled with many over the years. My plan is for it to be my last career. Don't be surprised if I start creating the soundtracks for some of my upcoming dvds.

    Eric Sprague:
    14. You are known as one of the most creative magicians out there and for always encouraging the same from students. How do you create new effects? Do you find what you want it to look like and work out a way to make it happen or do you look to existing sleights/methods and try to modify them to create the effect you want?

    Jay Sankey:
Great question, but instead of rambling on about such an important and complicated sujbect, I'm just going to suggest people pick up my CREATE YOUR OWN MAGIC dvd or my book BEYOND SECRETS. It's all in there.

    Eric Sprague:
    15. Is it hard lecturing and performing for magicians who are only interested in slights and hidden methods?

    Jay Sankey:
No. I can hang out on that wavelength too.

    Eric Sprague:
    16. Favorite food, favorite band/type of music, hobbies, anything else you'd like to share with our community?

    Jay Sankey:
Thai and Mexican. Streets, Van Morrision, Killers, Dylan, Jack Johnson, Elvis Costello and a ton of others. Hobbies? What's a hobby? I'm either working (magic) or sleeping or at the gym or playing with my son. Like I said. One lucky, lucky guy. Blessed through and through.

We are thankful that Jay took time from his busy schedule to answer our questions!

    More About Jay Sankey

Jay Sankey emphasizes the fact that tricks have to be practiced repeatedly in order for the effect to be spectacular. He talks about how important it is to end clean. He believes that magic is all about having a truly astonishing effect at the end.

Jay Sankey is to magic what De'vo is to xcm. Both are original and creative. Some artists sacrifice communication for creativity but not Jay Sankey. Our Paperclipped review emphasizes how he is both creative and grat at communicating. His teaching dvds are great because they have creative ideas communicated in a clear fashion.

Some of the corporate functions on Jay Sankey's resume are as follows:
    Coca-Cola
    Honda
    Chrysler
    Panasonic
    McDonald's
    Club Med
Paperclipped is just one of many great dvds that Jay Sankey has made available. Be sure to check out Paperclipped and some of the other teaching dvds by Jay Sankey.
