Pen Spinning Introduction

Pen Spinning has been around for a long, long time. I graduated from high school back in 1987 and in my school there were a bunch of pen spinners. They didn't do the fancy pen spinning moves that you see today but they did keep themselves occupied with basics like the sonic. Some of the teachers didn't seem to mind the pen spinning but others took notice, especially when students disrupted the class a lot by dropping the pen.

Pen flourishes have come a long way and now there are tons of pen tricks widely performed by many different people.

Pen Spinning in Our Forums

Sonic Pen Spinning Move

The Sonic is a basic pen spinning move where the pen goes from one set of fingers to another.

The Sonic is done quickly and there are quite a few variations. I'll describe how I do it. The pen begins with the tip down between the index and ring fingers. The middle finger moves towards the palm as the ring finger moves away from the palm causing the pen to spin. As the pen spins the index finger comes over the top of the tip. The index finger moves the pen down such that it pivots around the middle finger. Now the pen is back with the tip down. However, instead of being between the ring and middle fingers the pen is now between the middle and index fingers. I like to do this trick repeatedly so at the end I release it with the index finger and grip it with the ring finger.

Thumbaround Pen Spinning Move

The thumbaround pen spinning move is another basic move where the pen does what it says...moves around the thumb. The move begins with the pen held in place between the thumb and the index and middle fingers. Next the pen spins around the thumb and back into the starting position.

Fingerpass Pen Spinning Move

The fingerpass pen spinning move is kind of like the knuckle roll trick that is done with coins and poker chips. Unlike the knuckle roll which is done by the knuckles, the fingerpass is done down near the tips of the fingers. The idea is to move the pen from one set of fingers to another.
