Hi Everybody, I've been re-evaluating my free throw shot in basketball recently. I am right handed but I've been working on shooting left handed as well in certain situations. Free throws are one example. Typically one does not have enough time to get comfortable with a shot (defender in face etc) but free throws are an exception. My left-handed free throws are completely left handed. I've been trying this approach with my right-handed free throws as well with mixed results.

mmm, why do you use your left hand for free throws?
In what situation would that help?
IMO the free throw is something that should be done the exact same way every time, and for this to happen, it should be down to a science.
I would suggest working on right-handed free throws, shot with equal amounts of power from the legs and arm, don't jump, and follow through with your shot.
things that should be done both left and right handed are lay-up's and hook's. Anything else would simply take away from your % of baskets.

ahh, I see.
I've found also, that my left hand is amazingly accurate, but has very little power.
Perhaps shooting right handed free throw's may be a better use of practice time, though it does not matter in the end.
It's all about having fun of course.
cheers

Yesterday I made 7 out of 10 free throws (right-handed). The 3 that missed were all very close so I felt good about my routine. Here's what I did:
1. Throw the ball up such that it is spinning backwards.
2. Dribble and put the tips of the right finger in place in the second partition.
3. Bend the middle finger slightly such that it is in line with the index finger and the ring finger.
4. Line up the feet such that the right is slightly ahead of the left.
5. Bring the ball back such that the right hand is almost parallel with the floor.
6. Release and follow through.

I was a left-handed but when I was in my teens.. my father told me that lefty usually doesn't have the good looks in making a shot. So I decided to change my posture. I practiced with my right and right now, I'm good at it. I was a member of a basketball team. I'm a guard. And I'm not having a hard time making free throw.
Maybe this will help:
1. Square your shoulder to your knees and to the ring
2. Rest your body and relax. (inhale-exhale thing)
3. Dribble the ball
4. Release the ball and follow through.
5. Smile hehe
