Post Can anyone explain this card trick? Reply with quote
Alright, I'm new here, and I just wanted to know how my friend does this certain card trick. (We're both pretty amateur- no advanced tricks here)

We were basically showing off card tricks at lunch, alternating with each person doing a more impressive trick after the other, when one trick he did actually stumped me. (We didn't do the tricks to each other, just to our other friends, the spectators.) After I did one mind reading card trick, my friend followed with another one where he told a spectator to think of any card, but not to announce it out loud. Then, he shuffled the deck, and then looked through the deck, put a card on top, and told the spectator to look at it. The spectator was floored- the top card had been the card he was thinking of, a 5 of hearts!

All his other tricks I was able to explain, but I didn't get this one. And I'm POSITIVE the two weren't in cohorts with each other. It seemed simple enough to perform, but he could only perform it once. Did he just use a 'common' card trick, like using an Ace of Spades or a Queen of Hearts, or did he do something else? All help would be appreciated.

i want to ask you if he was using the same deck...because if he used a new one it may be a certain type of deck which does that....try to see david Blaine's videos....he performes a similar trick.....

Nope, it was the same deck. We were both using my deck, which is just your standard 52 card deck.

I've been looking on Google for an explanation of the trick, but so far no luck. I'll post the answer if I find it.

I think it might something similiar to what Derren Brown does. So a little bit of psychology, gestures and acting might do the thing.

Bear in mind we're both pretty amateur, none of us can perform a really complicated trick. Razz

There's always a possibility he might just have got lucky. He may have been planning to do something else but the spectator happened to name the top card (a la Vernon's Trick that Cannot be Explained).

That's possible, but he tried it on me once and was really confident and laughing to himself the whole time. He got it wrong, with the 6 of diamonds (I was thinking of the Jack of Clubs) but got it right with my other friend with the 5 of hearts.

sound slike a trick i do at the start of my ambitious card.

I always start by asking the spectator to think of a card and then get them to turn over the top card.

If i hit it then it's awesome, if not i make a joke saying' one day that's gonna work'

its a good start,k he was just chancing it, if that trick comes off its oine of the best tricks ever!

he got lucky, or he's derren brown, one of the two!

i love when a trick works like that and you happen to get lucky. one day someone will find a way to make that luck turn into a consistant trick that is effective. until then im with jonjo. I've had that happen to me where I ask someone to think of a card and I use a card from the top to make a color change to their card.
