Chip Collecting |
The February 2007 issue of Poker Pro Magazine has a great article about chip collecting by Reparata Mazzola.
Chips from historic casinos are special:
Gambling halls that had an impact on the early days of Las Vegas also are highly prized. The El Rancho Las Vegas, built in 1941, was the first casino resort on what would become the Strip. It was destroyed in a catastrophic fire in 1960, making any El Rancho items extremely rare. Chips from Bugsy Siegel's Flamingo Hotel, the Mob's first forray into Vegas, also have values in the stratosphere. [February 2007 Poker Pro Magazine page 60] |
Michael Knapp took this excellent photograph for the 2007 Poker Pro Magazine Beauty & Bucks article:
Even today there are opportunities to get limited edition chips:
The color of the original Jimi Hendrix chip from the opening of the Hard Rock Casino changed the very next weekend, so the first issue immediately became collectible.
...
Celebrity faces on the chips are also popular. The Marilyn Monroe from Trump Plaza in Atlantic City is both limited and obsolete, as are chips depicting Elvis, Dean Martin or Frank Sinatra.
And most casinos issued millennium chips. If you have one such chip from each casino, they would be worth more than $10,000 today! [February 2007 Poker Pro Magazine page 60] |
There is some nice info on the web to alert collectors about how chips should be judged:
The most complete and up-to-date guide to Nevada casino chips is The Chip Rack by Michael Knapp. Knapp's numbering system has become the hobby's standard means of referring to chips without having to describe each detail. It is a bible for collectors and has real values based on what chips actually sold for on eBay

Makes me really regret not grabbing a rack of the Stardust chips when I was there. They closed down on Nov 1st. Lotta history at that casino.
The movie Casino was based on the Stardust.
(kicks self)
At least I can say I played poker there and got a couple chips too.
