Cut Card |
|
I was wondering if when you guys play your home games, do you use a cut card. We just started using one. We had a large scale cheating incident and started keeping very close watch on each other. An easy way to make a cut card is to take the two jokers out of the deck and scotch tape them back to back. Then take a magic marker and make some sort of large marking to indicate that it is the cut card.

Cut cards are especially fun. They make people feel confident that you can't cheat .... ha !
Ever hear of greek bottoms ? ... dealing second from the bottom card. The cut card also does not help against markd cards or second deals.
If you are working with a partner, they can also do a false cut or slip cut on top of the "cut card" so now you can stack the cards and deal several people to the cleaners.
Sometime they slide the "cut card" into the deck....well there is a very old magicians force that allows you to reposition the cut card as you cut at the "cut card" location so in reality you are cutting the deck at your desired location instead of where the person actually placed the cut card.
I love it when players think they are protecting themselves
Reality is that someone who has these skills is only going to be in high stakes games where thousands of dollars can be made a night.

Not to mention there are many very easy and effective bottom palms where the 2 cards (im assuming you're talking hold em since that is all anyone plays now) can be placed under the cut card and no one will be the wiser.
We use one, they added it when i started doing performances for em, but its mostly so no one can see the bottom card which may influence one's decision.
Theyre newblets anyway, no cheating necessary, but we did the same thing you did, 2 jokes and scotch tape.

The cut card has 2 purposes in poker.
1) Prevent people from dealing bottoms (not true, just gives people a false sense of security)
2) prevent flashing of bottom card. Sometimes when people deal they tolt their dealing hand to high so people may see the bottom card of the deck. The cut card does prevent this. But, so does holding the cards in mechanics grip with the 1st finger curled around the front of the deck.
I don't know of other purposes of the cut card in poker.

Most of the guys I play with are fairly honest kids. None of them have a reason to cheat. It's mainly just to prevent seeing the bottom card. BTW, we usually use the same dealer everytime.

And ofcourse the other function of the "cut card"....mark the spot for the deck to be cut.
Some people prefer to cut a deck this way. The deck is in a more "exposed" view. But, ofcourse others say that this is all useless, and that cut cards won't prevent cheating.
I still think that a cut card should be used in any home games.
Ofcourse, it is still possible for cheaters to cheat , with or without cut cards. But the experience level is a bit higher. A lot of cheaters try to use their skills in "easy home games". Let them know your party is playing by the rules, and with a little protection. Maybe they'll go to another home game, with less protection...
