Discipline, Tilt and Gambling |
|
The most important bank roll management tool in my opinion is discipline.
I've just been playing for a while today. Maybe an hour. I did well and didn't make any bad calls or vein bets. I multiplied my buy in by 4 at one table, and made about 20 Big blinds at the other. I like to think it was because I was alert and had no distractions and when I was sucked out on, I let it slide. I'm getting tired and hungry now, plus I have things to do so I'm not going to play until in nourished, well rested and my 'chores' are done.
I've believe that the key to being a successful player is to only play when you are in peak physical and mental condition. It doesn't mean you have to work out and meditate. It just means that when you play... Be sure there's nothing on your mind troubling you. Don't play tired. You make worse decision when your tired. Don't play if there's something or someone distracting you. Don't play intoxicated. If you are must play when intoxicated, play the smallest level possible.
If you take a bad beat, made a stupid play that you noticed once it was too late, or made a technical error like checking instead of betting by accident, you can get frustrated all you like (although it isn't healthy). However, you must not let it effect your playing. (TILT) and the signs of tilt may not be as obvious as you think, especially if you are playing while tired or distracted. Tilt isn't always going all in every hand till you double up or bust out. It can mean, making a move on a player who's irritating you for that reason only. It can also be changing your good strategy to bad strategy because of a bad beat, like making min bets because the other guy making min bets has a big stack.
Another thing I noticed that made my game suck, is when someone's playing at your table that is playing in a style that frustrates you, like raising preflop every pot, or min betting every flop. These players sometimes piss me off and I'll just move to another table if it's getting to me. There are plenty of bad players, and I don't need to sit with this one.
Another symptom of tilt is gambling. What I have found happen to me is after seeing a limper make a huge hand, I'd try n see every flop cheap and end up crumbling my stack along with it. Or say, you know someone has a straight, and they made a huge bet. You have set and you want to suck out a card so bad, and you end up making an awful call. And losing the majority of the time.
One tip that I like is when someone chases their flush with out odds, and catches, don't tell them off and that they didn't have odds etc. You don't want Mr. Fish to go out an learn what mistakes he's making and actually fold there. Just remember that the majority of the time, you will win if playing correctly. Suck outs like that are the nature of the game.
Also, DON'T GET ADDICTED! This one usually leads to the other mistakes. It's just like any other gambling addiction or drug addiction. You should be able to go days without touching the money in your bankroll. Don't play higher stakes to make up for a big loss. Don't let it effect your daily routine. If you are putting poker in front of your real priorities, like friends, family or work, it's becoming an addiction.
These tips and a good knowledge of the game, should help if deciding to start a bankroll. It's all about discipline

I play 1 table $5 SnGs when I'm high and won 2 out of the last 3. It's interesting how you can focus more sometimes when you're stoned.

You've never had a bowl and found that you could uncannily concentrate on a video game or a song?
I'm not saying getting high makes me a better player, because it doesn't. You'll usually make worst decisions when yer high, and it's obviously a disadvantage, but I find I can concentrate more in some cases.
It's not something I'll do often. Although getting high was something I used to do very often. And if I felt like I had to play poker, I'd play a tourney where I couldn't lose much ($5)
No need to be insulted or rofl. You'll get just dirty otf.

I believe you're misunderstanding. My last reply was a general response to both of you. The "insult" part being directed to Chip Magnet in response to his post.
The context was that Chip Magnet said he was almost insulted. Not that you insulted me.

The best way calm down and make better decisions is with music, not drugs.
I only said I was insulted because I don't know many people who make good decision while high.
But hey, whatever gets it done, winning is the bottom line here.

I find music distracting while I'm playing.
After a bad beat, music is great to soothe singed nerves.
