Driving Range - First Time in Over 1 Year |
|
I hit some golf balls on the range yesterday and the results were good. It had been more than a year since hitting golf balls so I wasn't sure what to expect. I'm not completely surprised that things went well because I've been told that I have a good, natural swing. However, I have problems when I practice too often and develop bad habits.
Course: Cherry Island Golf Course
Bucket: $4 for 45 balls
Clubs: 4 iron, 3 wood, long driver, regular driver
Conditions: I worked out with weights the day prior but I wasn't stiff and everything seemed to go well. The regular driver was fine except many of the shots had a banana-type bend which ended in a slice.
Shoes: Tennis shoes(didn't bother w/ golf shoes)
Notes: talked to Don Hemmert 991-7293, 991-4131 about lessons ($35 per half hour, not available Wed and Sun)

What's your standard drive with a driver?
i'm not too much of a distance buff, in fact, I suck at driving. My average is like, 230. But my short game is incredible. I put on 100-150 yarder chips pretty well. So basically, par 3's, good, par 5's, bad.

Good Question. I really don't know. The reason I don't know is because I don't normally use it on the course(my 3 wood is more accurate and reliable).
I use the driver on the range a lot but most of the time I can't tell how far the ball goes. There was one driving range, however, that was kind of short so I could tell when the driver hit the back of it. I don't remember what that distance was but it was pretty short for a range. In fact they had signs on the upper deck telling people to use irons only on the top level.

I'm a regular golfer, it's a great game. I play for my highschool, national tournaments, local tournaments. I'm looking to go to college on a golf scholarship, but we'll see how things work out. In a normal week, I'll go out and practice 5 or 6 days. The only problem is sometimes it almost feels like a job, which is the exact opposite of whats it's supposed to be. Its fun to just go hang out at the range and goof around sometimes.

I golf about 3 times a week in the summer, but recently I've been frustrated with my game and haven't been out as much.

I minigolf whenever I get the chance!
I would love to learn how to golf. I went to a driving range with my class before and I was absolutely horrible. I love watching the game though.

I went golfing for real with my friend Bob on Tuesday (18 holes).
Things went well but my left side hurts after a lot of swings(I'm right handed). I have the same pain after baseball too, I'm not yet sure what adjustments I need to make to my swing and warm-up routine to avoid discomfort afterwards.
Notes to self on side rib oblique muscle strain:
From http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/chronicle/archive/2003/10/06/SPGNO25H7B1.DTL
 |
 |
The injury is a common one for hitters, who often strain obliques on big swings. It might be easier for a pitcher to rehabilitate such an injury, but hitters are brought along slowly because of the risk of aggravating the strain on check swings |
From http://www.improve-golf-swing.com/pdf/biomechanics-of-the-golf-swing.pdf
 |
 |
The muscle activity was recorded for rectus abdominus, external oblique, and paraspinal muscles. The amateurs generated higher peak myoelectrical activity than professionals during a golf swing. The professionals generated 34% greater club head acceleration at impact, but generated lower spinal loads and EMG activity. The authors explained it by different timing, where the professionals used the arms and wrists to generate speed, compared to the amateurs who were using the trunk or were swinging from the top. |
