Personally I have never tried it...but my fans still turn out nice. Might be your cards? I always use Bicycles for fanning, but I am awaiting my order of Tally-hos to come in since I can't seem to find them anywhere. Ebay...gotta love it.

If you don't have time to break in a new deck of cards, fanning powder is great. Fanning powder is great for armspreads too. My fans are awful, so I can't really say if it'll help you with those.
I recommend it. It's like 5 bucks for a bottle of it at any magic store. It's not a necessity, but I know some people swear by it.

Is there something special to it?
When I use to play pool a lot, I had pool powder, but I ran out of it, and realized that baby powder was almost just as good, so it could be a good idea just to test it with baby powder and see if you like it before spending your money.

Talcum (baby) powder works just as well from what I heard. I use fanning powder and it makes fans look so much better and makes armspreads much easier.

Cards with Air Cushion finish can't hold powder, just ask Jeff McBride....
That's one reason why I don't like Tiger decks, they stick together and clump easily. I'd say just throw the deck out.

I use fanning powder on my Bicycles and Tallys and it works fine. To apply the powder, I just sprinkle some in a paper (or plastic) bag and then I spring the cards into the bag. Shake the bag up for a few seconds and they're done. Take the cards out, square them up, and "clap" the deck to get the excess powder out. Maybe riffle the cards a few times too.
I wouldn't use fanning powder on my black Tiger decks. White fanning powder on black cards would look dumb, I'm sure.

Do you have a particular type of fanning powder that you like to use.
Where did you get it.
Does it really make that much difference?

I used to get the fanning powder they sold at the Superhandz website. Now I get it from an ebay store ($3.50, pretty cheap). Yes, it does make a difference.

Again you can get fanning powder at any magic shop. I'm sure you have a local magic shop near you (unless you live in an isolated area). If you don't have a shop near you, I'm sure you can purchase some from an online magic store. The Superhandz store is closed, so you can't get it from there.
I'm not aware of different types of fanning powder. I'm sure it's all the same though. My bottle says "fanning powder - makes fanning cards easier".

Kiki,
The magician's wax is an invaluable tool to a magician's arsenal. You can do all of the effects you described, and more. Levitate a card, balance a coin upright on ur finger, make a cue card, and many more. I think it is worth a try, and maybe buy. If, however, you're not a magician, then it has little use.
it's like...well...wax. it feels like newly melted candle wax, though not as hot! It is a little tough to get it off of the block of it, but it goes on clear. U just rub it on until it looks smooth, and it instantly sticks. If you want to know how to levitate a card with it, send me an email asking, since i don't think i could post it here.
Happy Tricking,
Homki890

Would you like to know what fanning powder really is ????
What to guess ?
No, it's not baby powder !
No, it's not talcum powder !
Try Zinc Sterrate ... yes !
Zinc Sterate used to be a baby powder for children with diaper rash. But, it is the classic fanning powder....
While fanning powder is GREAT for making fans...it is terrible for sleight of hand.
So, decide and enjoy !

i would have to agree that it is terrible for sleights too. However, it seems to be better for flourishes from my experience. While doing sybils, charliers, where a packet needs to be pulled off or dropped as one, the powder helps in doing just that. It also provides a better grip on the sides of the cards. I wouldn't recommend leaving a thick coating on though, it does tend to clump up cards if used in excess.
As for fanning...its pretty ironic, in my opinion, that my fans are worse with the powder . But give it a try, they might work for you. they can be found for under $5 anywhere on the net. Just google it!

I have tried fanning powder, although I haven't put it on a black Tiger. I have done it to a regular blue bike, though. I actually went through and put it on each individual card. What happens is, the deck feels different. The cards don't exactly stick, but fans are smoother and faros even seem different. It isn't absolutely necessary, unless you want to do fan twirls or something. Those are almost impossible with a brand new deck.

After you're done powdering your cards, you can go and powder your nose, and then put on some mascara, and straighten those eye-lashes, maybe get some new shoes, and then a new hair-doo, and those nails wount do.........
I think I got my point across? lol .
