First Exhibition |
|
Hi all,
Yesterday I was looking on a forum of the belgian pool association and it said that there would be a special event not far from my home to wish all the professional pool players good luck who were going to the European Championships. And after a lot of searching and asking, it turned out they also want me to perform a little trickshot show during this night
So I've got a few questions for all of those who have already had their FIRST exhibition behind them...
- What shots do crowds love the most when you are performing? set-ups, draws, massé, jump, ...?
- What's the best way to start? choose easy shots and build from there, or immediately 'wow' them by trying a DOD 10 or higher?
- Should I ask money for this?
- Are there any MAJOR changes when going from a 8ft to a 9ft with some shots in particular? (I noticed I can't do the 3rail power draw on a 9ft, at least not within 10 tries or so...)
- which shots would you recommend playing?
Thanks guys, and wish me luck! the exhibition will take place on the 20th of July, i'm really looking forward to it!

First of all, good luck !!
The crowd will love set-ups, prop shots, jump shots and masse shots. They want action !! For exemple, if you do draw shot #2 from the shot programm, even if the shot isn't that easy, they should like it less than the basic quick 4 shot.
When I want to do a little demontration to some friends, I always start with butterfly, quick 4 or just showing off. Don't choose a hard shot. Take a shot that is impressive and that you are going to make on the first try.
For the money, I'm not too sure what to say. You can ask money, that would be normal or you can wait because it's your first show and if you perform a show that was awesome and you get known a little more, you can start asking money from the second exhibition.
I have only played once on a 9ft table. It was on television with Alain Martel and, because of the table, I missed all my shots. I figured out I wasn't tall enough to hit shots that required to cue ball to be set in the middle of the table and to aim for one of the short rail. Also, I missed twice the just showing off by an inch. I think the shots where to cue ball or an object ball travels 2 rails or more are going to be slighly different from a 8ft table.
For the shots you should use, go and see the first paragraph and choose the shots you are sure to make within 3 tries.
Hope this helps ! I have never perform in front of crown of strangers so my advice aren't really the best but I am sure vash, yow, trickshottim or anyone else who has already perform a show are going to post here to help you

Thank you chipper for your insight on this. But I have one extra thing to say.
I thnk that difficult draw and follow shots will impress this particular crowd more, since the people watcing will all be pool players. They like to see tricks they can use in a real game, I think. But then there will be the problem of succeeding at the toughest draws and follos (f.ex: circular draw and follow) on a 9 ft...
I might have to think this trough and make sure I practiose enough...

well Tbuzz if the place were the exibitions at is gonna be full of pool players i agree do the Draw, follow, and masse shots. One word of advise about a monnth ago i preformed at the navy hospital in San Diego, Ca. my coach told me before had always start off with an easy shot that will biuld your confidence, then go to the hard shots if you miss one of the toughfer shot always follow it with an easy shot as an escape route. ( just showing off)
Good Luck

I have experienced only so to speak -"non official exhibitions" for mostly a few people at pool club or friends at home,
so I am hardly an expert. However, I would say that for people who do not understand artistic pool very well is much better to came up with "flashy shots" which are shots not very difficult but impressive enough as well. (I know I can make quite a number such shots on first try..for instance - seven plus 1 (the speed shots, three rails shot) or my one-handed 15 balls shot where the two wooden racks are... (very easy)... etc.....etc
but you says that the crowd will people who do understand pool ... well, there is different approach, but I am not sure what to say,
basically abdiaz66 as well as chipper are right, and I only have to confirm that ...some skills shot will needed apparently ...
but twenty (or so) of "more or less" impressive shots should not to be very difficult task to cope with, after all..
just make sure you select shots you can execute at least 70% of the time...
But it's easier said than done... but anyway, good luck my friend

first, congratulations, secondly, i have just one advice:
a good friend of mine and old pro, said me that if u want to show difficult shots, u must "eat the table", u must practice at least7 hours before to know perfectly the table...if u can't just made easy shot...
one other thing aboutr the "cloutage", i don't know the word for when u hit a ball with an other in order it stay on the felt( for the set ups), but u must made this BEFORE that's an obligation...So good luck!
about the video 40, it's a gift so...but all i can say it's it was also a gift for me lol u'll see...
btw a friend of mine post this video, his progress are incredible compared to his last video:

I made a show at a pool tournament where the audience was mixed, both pool players and general audience. The shots I chose were also mixed, both set-up shots and skill shots, and everyone was equally impressed by both. Here's a list of the shots i did: just showing off, slam dunk, through the gap (follow #4), over, around and under (prop#2), butterfly, 2mm draw (stroke playoff#1), one handed jump, the great race (jump#5), hustler masse, mingaud and rainbow (masse #1,4,5), bottle shot, titanic, bogdan wolkowski's triangle of death (the one with the volonteer standing on the rack), rosebud cluster (performed by volonteer and also a card trick. Both the educated amd uneducated public loved it. Hope this helps.

Thx everyone for all of the responses !
I just heard that I will be doing a show of about 20 minutes so I'm thinking I will need at least 15-20 shots to fill this up! However, I thought it was just a celebration night but it turns out the players will also be holding a tournament and I will perform while they are preparing for the quarter finals! So all eyes will be on me at that moment! I don't know how many people are going to show up, but I hope not too many
as for the shot program, I was thinking the following:
2 easy shots to start with
http://tombuzztrickshots.com/videos/7-1.wmv
http://tombuzztrickshots.com/videos/7-2.wmv
Then the 3 rail jump escape
http://tombuzztrickshots.com/videos/7-po1.wmv
If all went well, I start with the set-up shots
http://tombuzztrickshots.com/videos/1-2.wmv
(if this one fails I have an easy one prepared) => http://tombuzztrickshots.com/videos/trapped9ball.wmv
If these went well, it's Massé time
- hustler
- mingaud
- rainbow
- 6ball kick massé
After this I want to shoot some stroke shots since I think this will impress the players as well
- draw around the rack
- tombuzz railroad special (can make it in every 3 tries on my table)
But then I want to do some draws but I went to the place yesterday and I had a lot of difficulty with performing the APTSA draw shots... So I'll definitely need to practise this! However, I made the circular follow on 1st attempt when some guys who were playing at the other table looked at me like I was crazy So i'm definitely going to try this shot as well!
Thanks a lot guys! I'll keep you updated on how my practise goes

hey, just a precision, yesterday i was doing the video 40, and i made 30 shots in 2h, and every shot almost in 3 attempts, alls are possible in a show, so i doubt that in 20 min you can make more than 15 shots...i don't know exacly how many time u must count by a shot...but i think u 'll need a chrono to practice lol

i have to agree. In 20 minutes you shold go for 15 shots. I usually do 20 to 25 in 45 min or more, but that also includes talking, jokes and time to select volonteers from the audience. Good luck!

well, I went to he place today and succeeded at making alot of shots within 3 tries. Also, the owner was watching me do them and was quite impressed as well. I still have almst a month to prepare for this but it went very well today! I just hope I won't get too nervous performing in front of a crowd of 50 people...

hey, if it's only 50 people u can't be nervous !^^
like i said, when i go to this snooker room,i made lot of shots with Marine and i think something like 25 people watched me, and i was surprised it was not so hard!just the time btw the shots are difficult to manage...i used some of the history of trick shot: mike massey, steve mizerak, moscooni, but not a lot know who r this person so, i need to find new transitions...
How do u guys made this? joke? or talking about the bloopers????or anything other?

50 people's not a bad exhibition - you can't get many more around a table, really.
I tune my show to the audience. If it's a crowd of kids I do set-up shots. If it's good players, more masse shots and stroke shots. You'll figure out what works best under which conditions.
One tip is to have a few different cue balls. I have a silicone'd cue ball waiting for the end of my show when i do a demonstration of masse shots. Always hype up something you know you'll do well, whether jump shots/masse shots, etc. If you hype it up before you get to it in your show, then when you get there the crowd will be on edge and ready for it. Then you nail it and exaggerate your excitement.
As for misses, have a joke and don't try a shot more than 2 times, 3 if the audience wants it.
Hope this helps!

Yes, I do have 2 different cueballs, one for massé and one regular, but I asked the owner today if massé's were allowed andhe told me he'd prefer I would not do them since he has just had his tables reclothed. Bu!t maybe when it's time for the exhibition, he'll let me do it, I don't know, I'll have to wait and see.
I really hope they let me do it because the better comments I got from good pool players was on my last video (21st video) and they all wanted to see those tricks performed live on a show from me one day. So on one hand, this is the perfect opportunity, but on the other hand, It's just my first exhibition and I probably will need to get used to the fact there are people "expecting" me to MAKE it! The biggst problem with that is the transfer from 8 to 9ft! I found out that some of my aiming points weren't working when I went there to practice. It turned out even the just showing off shot needed some adjustments!
... So what advice can you give me about that? Are there any shots in particular I should avoid in the exhibition since the diference in aiming points is too big?

The show was a complete success! :d
here is the program I shot and how many attempts it took me:
- just Showing Off - 1st attempt
- Through the Gap - 1st attempt
- Jump escape - 1st attempt (7-1)
- Jump escape 3 rail - 3rd attempt (7-po2)
- easy 2 jump (one - handed) - 1st attempt !! THE CROWD LOVED THIS ONE!
- Tim's Twister - 2nd attempt
- 3 rail power draw - 1st ATTEMPT !!!! couldn't believe this myself
- Bank Jump - 3rd attempt (7-2)
- Easy 2 + 1 (first APTSA shot) - not made...
- Stroke Around The Rack - 1st attempt!!!
To end the show, I did the 2 player Just Showing Off shot with someone I met when I went to practise yesterday who is currently ranked 1st in Belgium. This Trickshot was also made on 1st try and the crowd went nuts After the exhibition i was told that the entire top 10 from Belgium was present and they all loved what I did. Also there were chairmen of the Belgian Pool Federation and they told me that they would look for more shows for me to give throughout the country :d So today was actually just perfect!!
The feeling you get when completing a show like this one is just amazing! And I didn't even get to do massé's they all asked me if I could show them some massé shots, but the owner was against it. It's understandable when you just had your tables reclothed and there is a tournament in progress... but anyway maybe some other time :d
Just wanted to say one more thing: thanks to all on the forum for all your help and support, couldn't have done this without you guys!

Good job tbuzz !
If I could, I would go and watch one of your show but that isn't really possible for now. Maybe one day !
Anyway, don't give up, you're on the good way and I am sure you're going to have a lot of new show scheduled soon.
