First Tournament Experience at the casino |
|
While on vacation in New York, I went to the Turning Stone casino. They have Texas Hold 'em tournaments everyday. I had never been in a casino tournament (I actually never really played in a home tournament either). But I figured, what the hell. Here's what happened.
First tournament
Tuesday afternoon
$65 buy-in (no re-buys)
Total entries: 101
Finished: 7th place - final table
Highlights:
Towards the middle of the tournament, I was dealt poket 10's. Dude on my right goes all in, so I call. He has big slick. Flop comes rag - rag - 10. The turn was also a ten. First time ever that I got four-of-a-kind.
Final table: I get dealt pocket 6's. Guy on my left goes all-in. Now, this guy was tight, because earlier he had folded poket 10's pre-flop! How the hell do you fold poket 10's? It actually turned out to be a good move because he folded to poket aces. Anyway, he goes all-in, and even though I know he's tight, I'm hoping he has big slick or chick slick or something like that, so I call him. He has poket kings, so that pretty much crippled me severely.
Final blow: I'm dealt pocket 7's. Guy on my right goes all-in. Again, another tight player, but I call anyway. He turns up pocket 10's, which pretty much crushed my 7's. That's what I get for trying to be greedy.
Because of my unexpected success at the first tournament, I decided to go back to the casino on the following Saturday. Only this time, the buy-in is $85, and because it was Saturday I expected a lot more people to play.
Second Tournament
$85 buy-in (no re-buys)
total entries: 136
Finished: 19th
Highlights/lowlights: I didn't quite make it to the final table this time. I was having trouble accumulating chips. I actually feel like I played better in this tournament that the first. Every time I went all-in or called someone else's all-in, it was always the right call (percentages in my favor). The problem was that this is poker, and just because the percentages are in your favor doesn't mean that you win the hands. I doubled up many people, making it very difficult to accumulate a decent chip stack.
Final blow: Man, this sucked. Guy who is the short stack at my table goes all-in. The man sitting next to him calls. When it gets to me, I look down at pocket queens. So instead of calling, I go over-the-top and announce that I'm all-in as well. Of course, the other guy calls MY bet. So now we have 3 all-ins. I turn up pocket queens, short-stack dude turns up A-J, and the other dude turns up K-J. I'm a slight favorite as far as percentages. Community cards came up something like: A-K-X-X-X. So the short-stack guy wins, but the side pot went to the other dude because his kings beat my queens. Ugh !
I still had a blast, and I won some money in the first tournament for finishing 7th. Also won lots of home tourneys while on vacation in NY.

I think you would've done better if you hadn't challenged the 2 tight players with low pocket pairs.

Exactly what I was thinking. People just have to remember that if you call an all in with a small pocket pair, you can only be at best a coin flip. Rarely are you going to be a pair over pair situation.
You probably already know this Dead so this is more so for the inexperienced players.... And congratulations on your final table finish.

Good job on your great finishes. You should have went with your read and laid down the 6s against a man you mentioned as a very tight player.

Sounds like a great time. I've yet to play a casino tourney (only ring games) but that will change soon.
7th is very decent out of 100.
