For who do you perform for the first time? |

Everyone who has ever tried a magic tricks know the feeling when he learns a new trick and wants to test it. The question is who would be the chosen one? Do have a person who is your "test rabbit"? Or do you just choose a random person?

I have a group of magicians on whom I can test new stuff. Usually it takes between six months and a year for me to work something in, so most of the time they have seen the development stages already.
Having said that, some things fall into place in a couple of weeks, and others I've been kicking around for almost ten years!
Take care, Ian

I usually test them on my little sister. right now if a professional magician approached her and showed her a trick, she'll be mildly impressed at most. once one came to her classroom and did some magic. all the other kids were screaming, she was like meh

A magician is one who can stand a few inches from you and with a borrowed coin, a lemon, a knife, a tumbler, or a pack of cards convince you he performs miracles. |

If there's a new move I'm working on, sometimes I'll do it in front of my girlfriend. She could care less about my cards and my flourishing, so I know if she says "Hey, that was pretty cool" then I know she actually noticed and I'm probably on the right track.
Back when I used to be on MSN a lot I would just ask TheEMan what his thoughts were.

For me there isn't a rule of thumb, I believe magic should undergo various levels of refinement, analysis and development until it matures into the complete product, and even then, you should never quit learning.
Ascanio held the belief that often magic should be refined for years before it was shown to the audience...obviously this never purely happens in practice. By which I mean, we perform in the interim, we start with some basics, we refine our performance etc.
For me, there are fundamental differences between showing a concept sleight, a concept effect, developmental effect, a sleight, an effect, and a performance. Conceptual effects and sleights I show only to magicians, since they have an understanding, an appreciation, and can comment on the quality, application, weaknesses etc. I do occasionally discuss conceptual effects in terms of the effect with others to play the idea and impact off of them.
Developmental effects (keep in mind, there is an on going process of improvement, but this is before extreme refinement) might get shown to close friends or relatives as a bit of a test performance. An effect itself might be shown to almost anyone, but differs from a formal performance. The height of refinement and impact should come across in the formal performance where routining, the structure of language, comfort building, etc. etc. etc. all come together for maximum impact. There isn't much of a test for the later, just more of a practice in the doctor sense of the word...a performance.

I always was the magician at festivals or partys at our Kindergarten when I was 4 Years old. Damn I wish I would have stuck to it. That would have given me 25 years of experience as a magician by now.
But unfortunately I didn't. I just got back into magic, cards, handsportz,.... a couple of years ago.
