Hey I need tips on building my poker table |
|
Hey im new here and i want to build a texas hold em Poker Table. I have been to many pages looking at different tables to see what i can make mine look like. The one thing that i have no clue what to use is the fabric for the table top. Is there anyone here who knows what type of material I should get and maybe a price.

the fabric you want is felt, its used for gambling tables (poker, blackjack, etc.) and like pool tables, you can but it at alomst all fabric stores (jo ann fabric) or if you have astore that specializes in gambling.
....or you could do what i did, i allready had a pool table, so i use that when i play poker, its big enough for 10 and its felt, oh yeah

What ever you do, don't use the "Craft Felt" it won't hold up. I put "Craft Felt" on mine from JoAnns and it lasted maybe 5 games before it started beading up. We had to use a lint shaver to make it smooth again.
I am looking at either "Velveteen" or a "Cotton Twill" that I have seen at JoAnn's that I like the color of. When I put it on, I'll let you know which one I use and how well it works for cards.
JoAnn's sells a true "Wool Felt" but it isn't wide enough for my table. It might fit yours. I think it comes in 30" or maybe 36" widths. I need it to be like 38" wide to fit my table and be wide enough to be able to attach it around the edge.
If you have a Pool Table seller in your area, they probably either sell Pool Table felt, or know who does and that should hold up much better and should come in big enough pieces to work.

velveteen, cotton twill, or whole felt are good ways to prevent the lint. I actually used a cotton/polyester on mine. It works good and feels good and it was inexpensive.
Pictures of my build:
the pictures show the cheap felt, I later had to refelt it with the cotton/polyester blend which works great.

Funny you should ask. Thats actually where we put the buy in money. THe money drops into a volcro attached money bag I got from a bank, which my wife cut down to a smaller size. But yes, sometimes i take a rake when people request my table at their house. Plus every time I hold poker games, I have a girlfriend of mine deal the game. She makes money on tip and sometimes i also give her a % of the rake.

Hahahahaha. Damn, nothing gets by you Da-Sh. But you are going to want to use velveteen (like other people already said), suade, or billard felt. Standard felt starts to ball up like crazy and just makes playing a hassle.

Why would anyone charge their friends a rake? It's a home game, you're not supposed to have to worry about things like a rake! Sure, if you're paying for "extra" amenities like a dedicated dealer (she's cute, I presume? ) or providing cigars and beer, then getting some money to account for that is always good. But why not just ask the guys for five bucks at the start, and call it even?
Ahh well. Everyone plays differently I guess.

I used designer suede from walmart. Less than $4/yd. Also got my vinyl for the rail there for less than $4/yd. Both look and feel great.
Pardon the cheesy picture. It is used for selling dealer buttons on Ebay.

Screw my friends. It becomes a hastle when I have to drive 25 miles with my Poker Table in the back of my truck and bring all the supplies and a dealer (yes she's cute) . Anyway, the rake shouldn't hurt the "poor" guys much. Its taken from the guy who wins a pot. If you do a 10% rake and cap it at $4, its not going to kill anybody. The pot would have to be $40 to get your $4. The guy who wins $40 isn't going to complain about $4 to the house.

well then if i charged a rake, my friends whould be like "F*** this" and then i dont get to play poker, b/c they leave. (i censered myself so i dont afend someone) oh well i dont mind not getting a rake, but i can see why your charging a rake, realy nice table, the 25 miles, hot dealer, hell i pay rake for that

I went by the local billiard store this morning and they want like $125 for enough felt to cover a standard 4 x 8 pook table. A little higher than I wanted to pay, but that would be enough for two coverings of my table.
I think I might try the Suede or Velveteen. Just not sure how easy the cards slide accross the table with those fabrics.
If you use one of these two fabrics, please post your ideas of how the cards handle on the material and how the chips being dragged accross the table works out.
Thanks,
I'm In

I have suede on my table. It's really nice, but the cards actually seem to stick almost. They will slide for a short distance then grab ahold of the fabric and come to a dead stop quite quickly.

what type of fabric to use |
|
I just finished making my table and used it tonight for a family tournament. The material i used is synthetic suade you can get at JOAnn's
fabrics for $6.99 a yard. great stuff and looks/feels plush! Much better than any speed cloth or wool felt or even velveteen. Worked great for me and pretty cheap.
