Home tourney starting chip amounts |
|
We typically have 6-10 guys that play on a regular basis, but sometimes get up to 20 people per game. We like to keep the games fairly short (1-2 hours max). My question is if I only use 3 denom's of chips (25, 100, 500.... we also have 1000's to color up if needed) How many chips should each person get to start off with? We usually start blinds at 25-50 and double every fifteen minutes, so an hour in we're at 200/400. Currently we start with 3 500's, 8 100's, and 8 25's. Is this a good setup, or do more people prefer something a little different?

The chip amounts are fine, but 15 min level that double may be a little speedy to make it anything but a crap shoot real quick.
I'd recommend 15 or 20 min levels that go like,
25/50
50/100
75/150
100/200
200/400
300/600
400/800
500/1000
600/1200
800/1600
1000/2000
Now this would prolly take a while to finish, however, that's the beauty of a cash game.

I give each player 65X the size of the first levels big blind to start out, but thats more than you would want to give out because our tourneys usually last 4 hours.

Yea that would be a good amount. That way players can make some long moves earlier.
To estimate how long your tourney will last, take the total amount of chips in play, (15 players X 2000 = 30,000). Devide it by 40 =750 as it will prolly be close to over when there's only 40 BBs left at the table. This is the blind level it should last to. 400/800, using the above blind structure. That'd be and hour and a half.
That's the formula I usually use.
