How to Build Poker Table: Instruction |
|
First of all, id like to thank eric...This site is very very good and has much potential.
Now, I have not yet built the table but this is how i will do it:
Layout:
The layout will be 84 inches x 36 inches. Each end of the table will be rounded at an 18 inch radius circle.
This should seat 10 comfortably.
Materials:
I'm buying all materials from this website:
http://www.casinosupply.com/
Padded railing (1ft sections) x18
Foam Padding (72 x 42 inches) x2
Plywood (8 feet x 4 feet) x1
Casino Felt (60 inches by 12 inches, connectable) x5...giving 60 x 60 inches
Pair of Black table Legs
This should cost around 120-130 dollars.
Procedure:
1) Cut this plywood to specified lengths.
2) Staple foaming to plywood, Stretch the foaming to opposite ends and staple. Than stretch the other two sides. Than go back and complete the rest.
3) than do the same with the felt. Make sure all parts are tight and covered.
4) Flip the table over. Connect the table legs.
5) Staple the railing on.
Boom! Your done! For only a small....very small fraction of the cost. You made your own Poker Table that actually looks very nice!
Comments:
I am also adding things in personally...I will cut holes for chip racks I already own for each player. I am cutting a 12x24 inch slot in the middle of the table. There will be a chip rack there to basically be the bank. There will also be an area in this hole for money to be held. When you are done with the bank You can replace the cover which will match the table exactly. You can also add hinges to the middle...and be able to fold the table when done.

Sounds pretty cool. Just a shame I'm too lazy to do all that. Still you never know.......

What does "connectable" mean when you are talking about the casino felt? Wont you see the seams when you put the pices of felt together?

By the way, using tools that I already have (air compresser, circular saw, hand saw, jigsaw, air stapler), I only spent 180 USD on supplies netting a save of 270 USD. Makes me REALLY happy =)
A octagon table would need to have a 5 foot diameter from one corner to the corner opposite it.
This would give each player enough room to play.

Really nice table. I'm also thinking about one .
BTW: I deleted the first post with pictures - I think that the only picture is the same as in your next post.

Hey,
That's a nice hold'em table.
I made this six seater myself and one as a gift for a buddy of mine.
The cost was about $65 in materials and I had two tables when I was done. That includes varnish and clearcoat for one table. HE had to stain and finish his himself.
And these are only tops. I just set mine on top of a round or square table.
It works great on a regular folding card table too.
Edit:
I am attaching the actual picture since we can do that now.
8 seater is in background of photo.

Hey PAFisher amazing table. I was wondering if you would possibly care to explain how you make your table, or how you would make an eight seater just like it. Seems to look great and at that price I would be interested in finding out how you did it. Thank you for your time.

The table was made in two parts.
There is a ring that is the wooden part you see with cup and chip wells, and then there is the center of the table which was made as an insert.
The ring is made from a 2 x 6 board cut with 60º angles at each end so that when the two ends are put together, they make a 120º corner. I cut 6 pieces of the 2x6 with 28 in long sides and 60º angles at the ends. I just had to make them long enough so that the table was just over 4' from flat side to flat side. Then I used a router to route a ½in x ½in ledge along then inside edge of the six pieces. I also used a router to cut out the chip and drink wells.
Then I joined the six pieces together with wood glue, clamps, and a small metal bracket on the inside of each corner.
The six pieces formed a hexagonal ring with a ½in x ½in ledge around the center.
I cut a piece of MDF to fit the hole and then covered the MDF with batting and felt. I used cheap craft felt and it has already started to ball up, so I am shopping for new material this weekend. Either better felt, or denim. I'm not sure yet.
I am going to do an eight seater next time and when I do, i'll make the chip wells larger and probably put a drink well on both sides.
360 degrees / 6 sides = each corner is a 60 degree angle.
180 - 60 =120
120 / 2 = 60
For an 8 sider, 360/8 = 45º so each corner would need to be 135º when finished meaning each board would need to have 67.5º angles on each end.
The length of the flat sides would determine the overal width of the table. If I leave them at 28" then the table will be too large, so I'll just have to play around until I find the right length that gives me enough room on each side but still fits on top of my table.
If i make each of the 8 sides 24" then the length from flat side to flat side would be approximately 58"
If you have more questions, i'd be glad to try and answer them.
Oh yeah I used a table saw to cut the angles, but next time, a radial arm saw would probably work better.
James
PS I added a couple more shots of the table, closeups of the corners and with the insert taken out.
Edit:
Lost links to the other site where pictures were. Here is a copy of my "Plan" for the 8 seat table.

Click on the link in my first post and it will take you to another forum that I post on that allows pictures. In that post, are thumbnails of the photos, if you click on the thumbnails, then the larger image comes up.
BTW I corrected my math in my last post so that the corner angles should work out now. I tried to draw it the way I described and the corners didn't work out. Forgot one of the steps in the formula. (It was late)
I am also adding a scan of my initial drawing on the eight seater.

Learned how to post them within my message.
Sorry for the problems with you viewing. Evidently if you are not signed in, you can view the general discussion forum over there, but cannot view photos.
All better now.
Still have to find somewhere to host the pictures out there in the www though.

I deleted them...the problem is you're trying to pull an image from a page that doesn't really exist....it's there but it's php so it's not really there.....if you want to show the pictures then you'd have to do what you did with the 8-seater picture....you can't link to download.php....the [img] tag needs a url to an image file like .jpg

So what you're saying is that even though I can see a color photo of my table leaning against the wall in my last post, no one else can?
I guess this is just to involved for me.
I have to work and can't take the time to learn all this stuff right now.
How about I send the photos to someone and they can post them.

Last attempt
Evidently the size limitations over at the other site cause pictures that are too large to be shown as thumbnails and the address for what you see when you click on the thumbnail is this php thing you are talking about.
Is there some other way to do this than finding another site to host pictures on? It is really a pain to post them over there just to show them here.
Oh well,
James

Poker Table Top? |
|
These tables look really nice. Unfortunately, I live in an apartment, and don't have room for another table. Any advice for buiding a Poker Table top I can use on top of my current dining-room size table?
Thanks.

The one in my post is a table top.
It will slide under my bed or behind the door in a room as it is only two inches thick.
I also saw one where a guy took a folding card table and recovered it with felt.

Sorry to bump the thread but...
 |
 |
Here is the 8 seater initial drawing.
 |
Thanks for the plans
It turned out great. I just finished it a few minutes ago.
I had to modify a few things though.
Mine is slightly smaller (54 inches i believe)
I found it extremely less expensive to use 1.5x6's instead of 2x6's
I didn't bother with chip wells beause I like stacking them and I don't think the wood was thick enough anyways.
Instead of using foam then fabric I found a seude that had short fur ont he back of it, almost like carpet which worked perfect. For how much I needed it was going to cost $78 but i got it for like $22. (thanks to my mom's fabric land discount card )
And I added metal banquet folding legs to the bottom so I don't need a whole other table to put it on top of all the time.

very nice.....i'm going to have to build my own.....i have a nice table i could turn into a Poker Table......it kinda is right now....but i would like something a bit bigger because when we play at my house it's like 8-10 people and the table's not big enough......neither is the space though so when i move i will definitely be building something bigger
i could always ask a buddy to help.....he's a carpenter

Glad you could use the plans |
|
EriCKY,
That table looks great. I do have a few questions. I haven't actually built the 8 seater yet, only two of the six seaters in my post. Have you played on it yet? Does it feel like it is big enough? How long are each of the edges if the overal width is 54"? I might modify my plan if you find that it works well.
When you say 1.5 x 6, do you mean 1 x 6? I haven't really noticed 1.5 x 6's except that most wood when you buy it is actually smaller than what they call it. ie... a 2 x 6 is usually like 1.75 x 5.75 or so, but they still call it a 2 x 6 . Oh well. You said that you didn't put wells because you thought it wouldn't be thick enough. This is specifically why I chose to use a 2 x 6 instead. I can make a 1" deep hole and it still feels strong and everything. Did you use 3/4 " MDF for the insert, or did you go down to 1/2 " ?
My table is heavy because of the 2 x 6's I bet yours is lighter and easier to move. I haven't decided whether or not to put legs on mine. Where did you buy the legs?
Did you use biscuit joints and route the lip on the inside like I suggested?
Thanks for sharing your table with us.

OK I double checked all the measurements so I can answer these questions...
 |
 |
Have you played on it yet? Does it feel like it is big enough? |
No, but I'm planning on doing so tonight and I'll let you know if it's a good size for 8 people.
 |
 |
How long are each of the edges if the overal width is 54"? |
23"
 |
 |
When you say 1.5 x 6, do you mean 1 x 6? |
No, they are 1.5
It's true that wood isn't normally as thick as it as advertised, it was more like 1.25 x 5.5 but it was advertised as 1.5 x 6
 |
 |
Did you use 3/4 " MDF for the insert, or did you go down to 1/2 " ? |
No, I stuck with 3/4
 |
 |
Where did you buy the legs? |
Home Depot. I couldn't find them myself so I asked an employee and they showed me where they were. They cost $19 (Canadian)
 |
 |
Did you use biscuit joints and route the lip on the inside like I suggested? |
No, I actually used dowels and wood glue for the joints.
Instead of routing it I made a guide-type decice and used a circular saw. It may sound wierd but it worked perfectly.
There's a few other things you should know about the table. I didn't have a chop saw to get the angles perfect for all the cuts, so I actually made a jig and used a circular saw.
The piece that we were cutting went in the middle of it then the top piece of plywood guided the saw to make a straight cut.
So this table took some trial and error, and a heck of a lot of luck. The chances of all of our angles and everything fitting as well as it did when building this freehand was minimal. So I would say we did a good job.

That is fantastic. I would never of thought of using a jig and a circular saw for the angles. I did most of my work on a table saw. It took several cuts to get the angles right so that when we layed the table out it closed all the joints correctly. The first one is actually a little lopsided, but you can't tell in the pictures. The way I know is that the insert will only fit in one direction so I had to make a mark so I know which way to lay it.
I will have to look for 1.5" boards here when I do my next one.
For the lip on the inside, we actually used the table saw to cut 1/2" in and 1/2" down and that made the lip perfect. Afterward, when we used the router to do the chip holders and cup holders, we decided that the router would have worked well on the lip too so that is why I suggested it.
How long did it take you to make it. Mine didn't take all that long to build. I just did it in steps and there were several days between steps because I did it on my days off.
Dowels should work just as well or maybe better than the biscuit jointer. My friend had one laying around, so we used it. I still put the little metal brackets on the inside of each joint just in case.

How long did it take you to make it |
Well, including making the jig, cutting, sanding, glueing, staining, and everything else that went into it I would say it took about 10-12 hours of my time.
When I say my time I mean I'm not counting the 8 hours that it took for each layer of the stain to dry, or the overnight for the glue to dry.
