left-handed golf |
|
I am right-handed so I've golfed right-handed all my life. The last several times I have played there has been significant pain in the left side of my rib cage afterwards. Obviously something in my swing is causing the issue. I've noticed this same problem after hitting balls at the baseball batting cage and I've read about baseball players having this issue (I don't recall what they call it though).
Purchasing a left-handed sand wedge, I thought it would be fun to see what happens when I hit golf balls left-handed. The first day hitting left-handed at the driving range a few weeks ago was difficult. The good news is that there was no pain in the right side of my rib cage afterwards. The bad news is that my swing was inconsistent and awkward.
Today I gave it another try left-handed and the results were much better. I still haven't tried hitting without a tee but the consistency is improved and the swing did not feel as awkward. Early in the session I was hitting the ball too close to the heal of the club so I adjusted by lining up with the ball closer to the to of the club when it was addressed. Another thing that helped was shortening the back swing to about 75%. There were several streaks where I was able to hit multiple balls in a row nice and high, having them land near the 75 yard marker. Lining the tee up with my right foot seemed to help as well. This concerns me slightly as it is my understanding that this stance is more appropriate with longer clubs like the driver whereas the tee should be between the feet with smaller clubs like wedges.
An older gentleman next to me gave me his leftover golf balls as he left the range and I am grateful for the extra practice it gave me.
Initially when I started hitting left-handed I felt as if I was on the same level as someone new to golf altogether. Not it doesn't feel that way. I'm not sure how the mind and the body click on this but hitting left-handed is becoming easier now. I've noticed this same type of thing with poker chip tricks. Typically I learn a trick with my right hand first. I've noticed when I move on and learn it with the left hand it does not take as long as it did with the right.
Soon I want to purchase a left-handed 9 iron and see how that goes. At some point I'll have to try hitting left-handed without tees.

my grandfather had the same problem. but then i told him that his left knee and left shoulder must be the hole time higher than the right ones. and it does help! he hasnīt any more a problem with his rib. itīs called the O- Factor invited by Bernhard Langer. he had the same problem and tried and tried until he got this position! it sounds simple, but it isnīt as that easy to do it right. just try it
i hope i could help
peace SoH
P.S: i tried lefthanded golf too, but.... letīs say it like that:...i had to buy a new windowglass
no i am not doing that anymore
good luck

SoH, I'm glad you replied here. Are you saying that I just need to keep the left side of my body higher than the right side throughout the swing? I think the knee would be easy because the weight is on my back foot until the very end. The shoulder would be more difficult. I wonder if it will mess up my left-handed swing if I try these changes in my right-handed swing. I googled for

"Bernhard Langer" golf rib |
but the results were confusing. Do you have any links?
On the left-hand side I am making more progress but sometimes I feel the same way as when a chip trick is attempted for the first time. It is frustrated when others can do something so effortlessly and I am just starting out. I think I'll stick with the left-handed swing awhile more before I try the left knee/shoulder changes with my right-handed swing.
One problem with my left-handed swing is that I slice it. I'm not yet sure if the slice is from the swing going outside to inside or if it is because of the face of the club.

no sorry i havenīt any links, i only read this in a magazine.
if you slice try that you turn your upper hand into direction to the other hand (left handed: turn your right hand to the left // right handed: turn your left hand to the right)
