Late Night Poker Programming Features Well-Known Poker Pros and Hostess Shana Hiatt

NBC began taping Poker After Dark at the South Coast Hotel Casino in Las Vegas earlier this week with an estimated 52 episodes in the making. The show will debut on Jan. 2, 2007 at 2:05 a.m. ET, six nights a week.

Poker After Dark is NBC’s second poker program. The first was the National Heads-Up Poker Championship that aired earlier this year and sent ratings through the roof. NBC executives expect the late-night poker show to satiate the appetites of poker fans as it competes directly with ESPN’s scheduled reruns of the 2006 World Series of Poker.

Each hourlong show will feature six professional poker players competing for $120,000 in a winner-take-all format. Players include Phil Ivey, Daniel Negreanu, Doyle Brunson, Howard Lederer, Chris Ferguson, Erick Lindgren, Jennifer Harman, David Benyamine, Allen Cunningham, Gus Hansen, and more.

The show’s hostess is the former World Poker Tour’s Shana Hiatt, a familiar and welcome icon in the industry. As only the veteran hostess of poker can do, Hiatt lights up the screen and brings her own style and professionalism to Poker After Dark.

Each night of original programming will feature an intimate look at one table as it develops over the week, culminating with a winner on Friday night. The Saturday night show, called “The Director’s Cut,” will recap the week's events with Hiatt and the winner of the week reviewing the week’s events and offering commentary.

Poker After Dark is produced in conjunction with Poker Productions, the only television production company owned and operated by top professional poker players. Producers Mori Eskandani and Eric Drache bring 63 years of combined poker experience to their company and both have played a key role in producing some of television’s best poker shows, including both seasons of NBC’s National Heads Up Poker Championship, two seasons of GSN’s High Stakes Poker, three seasons of Fox Sports Net and NBC’s Poker Superstars and CBS’s Intercontinental Poker Championship.

Has anyone watched this yet. It's really quite interesting.

First table is Phil Hellmuth, Huck Seed, Annie Duke, Steve Zolotow, Gus Hanson and Shawn Sheikhan.

What I like about this show:

They show just about every hand

    There is very little commentary

You get to hear most of the table talk

Steve Zolotow who is an unsung poker pro

What I don't like about this show:

The little commentary they have is usually as informative as some drunken rail bird. They should be explaining important parts of the hand. They guy doesn't seem to know alot about poker. They may as well have Wilfred Brimley or Dick Van Patten

The hostess doesn't seem to know alot about poker either, although, she used to host some WPT events

They got a donk like Shawn Sheikhan to be on the show. (Phil said "he's good TV) I think he's creepy. He has that look in his eye like he knows how out of his league he is. His conflict with Mike Matusow in the 2005 WSOP made him a "poker vilan". That's why he was on HSP and that's why he's on this show. Weirdly enough, he's acting just like Mike acts around Phil. Even using the same slang. It goes to show what an uncreative character this creep is.

Over all it's really interesting to watch, mainly because of the table talk. I think that's the reason HSP was so popular.

I watched most of PAD this week, and I have enjoyed it thus far. The show does seem to just focus on the action. The commentary does suck I think, and as always, I ask myself, "Where's Gabe Kaplan when you need him?"

As for Phil Hellmuth, I don't know if he was right about Shieky being out of line but I think he was out of line by just walking out of the room. Does anyone else notice that there's really no tournament director? But it was no suprise to me really that Hellmuth was first out, afterall, I predicted it. What I also predicted was a heads up match between Hansen and Seed, and I got just what I wanted. Gus proved that he can definetly play with the best players in the game by winning that table.

What's interesting to me about the chips, they also used cash, so I thought at first it was a cash game, nope, it was a tournament. And when the 25 chips became useless, I don't think they raced them off. I just assumed also that the cash was for whoever had all the chips can just take the money and leave as the winner.

Overall, I'd rate the show a 3/5, it can use some improvement, like the commentary, find some new people to actually analyze hands. Shana Hiatt, as the hostess, is alright, but all she's really good for on that show are the interviews, and she's not 100% good at that either.

I completely agree!

Also it is lame that there's no floor man or tourney director.

Thanks for giving away the ending. Crying or Very sad No worries. I watched the 1st 4 eps.

Yea that didn't make any sense, why would they use cash in a tourney. And it was held at a casino, although it looked like a studio, you think they could have arranged for a proper tourney.

More Hollywood influencing poker for the worse.

Oops, sorry, next time I won't give anything away.

I just assumed the cash was for the winner to take when (s)he won the table since it is winnet take all.

Ah that's fine. I shoulda mentioned that i hadn't seen the ending.

Regarding the cash at the table, what yer saying makes sense. I think they were given like 10K in chips and 10k in two 5K stacks. IMO that's kind of unprofessional. Must be cuz the producers wanted it to look like HSP with the big wads of bill. I'll still watch it, because the pros have such cool stories to tell. Steve Zolotows betting on Annie's marriage. lol

I found the lack of commentary disturbing.

Yea the guy that is doing the "commentary" doesn't seem to have a clue. I believe their goal was to get a show that had more table talk, due to the success of HSP, in which ppl loved the table banter.

On HSP next season, Gabe Kaplin will be sitting down at the table for a couple of eps and playing, while Daniel Negreanu will be doing the commentary. Which is probably a safe play as he's lost a lot of money on HSP.
