Observing the table routine/flowchart/mnemonic? |
|
Hi all,
I was at the casino for a full 11-hour session yesterday playing $2/$4 limit.
I knew that I should have been observing the table, trying to detecting patterns and styles, etc from other players. I did not know exactly *how* to go about doing this.
What is your observation routine? Is there an algorithm/flowchart? What exactly are you looking for?
Each time a hand is dealt, what do you tell yourself as the bets come to pick up on the right information?
Is there a mnemonic or filing system that you use as you see information to make it easy to remember? How do you organize your info?
Thanks all. Really looking forward to getting some discussion on this aspect of the game.

At a $2/$4 limit game at a casino, you won't need any advanced strategy as you're usually going to get called to the river by someone so just bet the heck out of your made hands and don't be too lose pre-flop. Such bad players at that level. Several times I was smooth called on the river by someone with the nuts.
You just need your basic limit strategy.
I find there's a huge difference between live $2/$4 and $4/$8, (even $3/$6).
Also, the rake is usually $4 from $40 so it's hard to keep ahead. I'd only recommend live $2/$4 if you want to get drunk at a casino for cheap.
What's the next level at your casino?

With regards to physical tells, a good one at this level is... Watch the players when the flop is being dealt. A player with a hand is more likely to look at their chips right away.

I'm always asking myself, "what does this person have, and can I beat it?". Eg. If it's call, call, call, then to you. You look at 88 and just call. It's basically a family pot. Flop is 7c 4c 2d. Lets say it's check, check, then bet. It's now to you. What do you think he has? Top pair would be a safe assumption. You should raise because you have that beat. Also, if he has a better hand, he will likely raise you, giving you valuable information. You can smooth call if he does raise as you'll be getting great pot odds. Say it's folded you and he smooth calls.
Say the turn's a Kh. Well he prolly didn't call pf with K7, although it's possible. If be bets, again, you should raise, cuz it still looks like he has top pair to me and if the king helped him he'll raise. (giving more valuable info). Just calling here would be a mistake for you, because you get no information about his hand. Lets just say he smooth calls.
River is a 9d. If he checks, you should bet, as he's basically saying that he's beat by anything. If he bets, you could easily raise here for value as his hand doesn't seem improved. If he raises, just smooth call as a check raise at these stakes is almost always a good hand. He checks, you bet and he smooth calls. He had A7s like we anticipated, and you take the pot with a pair of 8s.
It's all about putting your opponents on hands based on their betting IMO.
As for $2/$4 limit online, it's a whole different ballgame.

Observing the table routine/flowchart/mnemonic? |

I haven't played at a casino and at the table i lose focus with my friends. Online I try to look how much they raise with big hands, small hands...how they bet draws, what their checks mean, what hands they showdown, etc. Try focusing on the players left and right immediately of you. Then spread outward. One question I would like to ask do you play online poker? If yes then Poker pro lab has got a calculator which provides you with key statistics such as pot odds, chances of winning and outs These will have the most impact. Otherwise, it comes with playing many, many hands. Someone else will chime in.
