Review: George Joseph's Cheating At Poker DVD |
|
Hi Everyone.
Here's my review for this wonderful product. It's been a while since I reviewed the last product I bought, so if I mess up a little, don't be surprised.
OK here we go. The DVD is basically the same "protection" video that was produced about 20 years ago, except it's on DVD format now. The quality of the DVD is good, but the footage, again, is pretty old, so don't expect anything fancy.
My opinion about George Joseph: George Joseph is an authority on gaming protection and cheating. He's all around one of my favourite guys when it comes to my favourite subject, which is gambling and cheating. He executes the moves very well.
On to the DVD. George demonstrates and explains many sleight-of-hand techniques that are used to cheat at the game of Poker. You will learn false shuffles, false dealing, peeking at cards, switching cards, marking cards, controlling cards during shuffles, bend work, culling discards, crimping, palming, cold decking, false cuts, daub work, nullifying cuts, holding out, and much more. Each subject is further covered with demonstrations and discussions about related variations and techniques.
The tape DOES NOT go into depth when it comes to the "expose'" part. It only goes over the basic "what happens" during this and that etc. But you should have no problem picking up the moves if you already have a background in this field. The DVD shows and exposes many moves, which is one of the great things about the DVD actually. The DVD is fairly long, about an hour, so for those who don't like gambling and cheating, I don't recommend it, cause you don't wanna be out of your mind bored for a whole hour when you're watching this.
Overall, I thought it's a great DVD. The production quality could've been better, but again, the tape is from about 20 years ago, so I can't complain.
Overall: 9/10 for quality (Michael, stop complaining)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bear in mind that these DVDs are expose DVDs and not teaching DVDs. They are NOT designed to teach technique. But, they are interesting to expose cheating methods and will educate people on what to look out for when trying to catch card mechanics.
Therefore, if you want to increase you knowledge regarding methods to protect yourself against card cheats...I feel that the DVD is worthwhile. Just don't buy it and expect to learn technique (ie. The DVD does not discuss in detail hand positions, finger action, misdirection, subilties, etc.)
Mitzko mentioned in his review that you will have no problem learning "if you have a backround in this field"...this is true...but, the key words are "IF YOU HAVE A BACKROUND".
I did enjoy the DVD and am glad it is part of my library.....but, I personally did not learn much.

How does it compare with some of the other exposes by the likes of Forte, Piacente, Turner, Ortiz etc.?

Remember that the Joseph tapes were produced in 1981, and were the first of their type. There were three tapes in all, Poker, Craps and Blackjack and Gin and Backgammon.
I have the original tape of Poker, and it is the same format as all the others - that is to say a close up on hands and very dry to watch. The fact that they were playing with new technology - some of the camera work is shakey at best. I also have the DVD editions of Blackjack and Craps, and the footage is (understandably) better quality than my twenty year plus tape.
Like all the other tapes, these are not teaching resources. They can be of interest to people with an interest, but there's nothing ground breaking (unless you realise that they were ground breaking at the time...)
At twenty dollars each there's not really a reason not to get them, if you are interested. The Craps one is only twenty minutes, but there is still some things that didn't make it onto the Forte Dice tape.
Take care, Ian

it's short and sweet! I got it for some dice switches, which I'm playing around with at the moment. There are three (I think), one of which is almost ridiculous (as a practical move) and two that are interesting.
There's a bunch of stuff about past posting and collusion with the pit crew, and the usual stuff about gaffed dice.
For twenty dollars you won't be too dissappointed.
Take care, Ian
