Revolutionary Card Technique, cheating? |
|
Hi!
I am wondering if I should buy the book Revolutionary Card Technique by Ed Marlo. Does this book give anything to someone who is interested in becoming a mechanic and cheating?

i assume it will give you some slights that you will use.
this could take years i warn you.
Look the books contents, some slights are not very hard to deduce what they are
eg.. bottom deal

While many magic sleight of hand techniques can be used for cheating....including Marlo material......I agree that learning proper technique will take years of practice.
The good news is that Marlo published many methods....this is good and bad....it is bad because you have to try many methods/techniques to decide what is good for you and you working style and environment.
Sorry, but there is no easy way to become a sleight of hand expert.
I also, don't think Marlo published these technqiues to be used to cheat.....but, like most things in life....they are dual purpose and can be used for good/entertainment and evil

It depends what portion of Revolutionary Card Technique, really I'd say it's a good book to have because it is like an encyclopedia or reference for a lot of material, but you aren't likely to ever read it from cover to cover. All said and done, it is probably the best value book, or at least one of them, that you could purchase, for $50 (I think that's the going price) you aren't going to find more material packed together anywhere.
Beware, it is generally pretty dull reading and like Expert Magician said you have to sort through what is good and what is not as Marlo was obsessed with publishing virtually every method that occurred to him. A lot of the effects he mentions are basically intended for the purpuse of hanging sleights on than really high impact material, but then again, you were mentioning cheating so I'll address that specifically.
The vast majority of the material is almost useless for cheating, take the sections on side steals or miracle card changes for example. Let's see, I don't have my copy with me at the moment, but looking over the table of contents:
Miracle card changes is pretty much useless
Action palm is...questionable (honestly if you watch some of the techniques in action you have to wonder about the practicality and the method, in other words, there tend to be better means of accomplishing the same thing)
Fingertip control is useless
Side steal is useless
Tabled palm is questionable (could possibly be adapted, but again, not really ideal)
The faro shuffle, this can be alright (one should learn a faro shuffle, but the application is fairly limited as faros tend to be useful mostly for the purpose of stacking when there are a specific number of players)
Faro notes (See faro shuffle)
"Seconds, centers & bottoms" this one is useful in cheating but with a few considerations namely, that a lot of people find it difficult to learn from, a lot of the methods aren't necessarily practical, however overall it is one of the classic sources when it comes to false dealing
The Multiple Shift is not generally practical
Card Switches, this could be, though as I recall the methods Marlo mentions often aren't the best from the perspective of cheating
Estimation, very theoretical and not really applicable to card cheating
So to answer your question, can you get stuff related to card cheating out of there? Yes, definately. Is it the best source? No, probably not. Does it encompass the full spectrum of card cheating? No, definately not. Does Marlo have a lot of good material? Definately.

There's a DVD called "The Art Of the Card Shark." I think that's the name of it. I think Marp knows the website for it.

In my experience there isn't really a single good source on cheating, you have to look at a few of them. For example, you can pick up a book on hand mucking, or a book on false dealing, or a book on riffle culling and stacking etc. But there don't seem to be many sources that really combine it all together.

Hi!
Drey, could you plz recommend a book on culling and stacking. This is my main interest right now. Mucking cards isnīt really a big priority for me either.

I haven't really read much on the subject of culling and stacking, I came up with my own techniques but from what I hear the most highly recommended source would be the three riffle shuffle system books by Marlo, though you may have trouble finding copies in print. The titles are "The Riffle Shuffle Systems", "The Riffle Shuffle Finale"...and I can't seem to find the name of the third. Anyway, if you locate a good source for all Marlo material I would appreciate it if you would let me know.
