Are we talking about the Hugard book?
Hmm.. It’s a curious book, there are a lot of little gems in there that, with some thought, can be combined with other more modern tricks, techniques and sleights to create something stronger. However, much of the work in there is dated, which is not great surprise considering it was compiled in the 30’s. Expect to find a lot of tricks relying upon Si Stebbins stack, one way back designs, obtuse mathematical principles that achieve their goal
in the most complicated and convoluted manner where a simple thumb count or second deal would suffice. That aside, provided you’re willing to muddle you way through a lot of tricks we would now consider mediocre you’re liable to find some rather wonderful little ideas and principles in there. A few favourites of mine are the $1000 dollar card location, Presto, Finger Points, Psychological Stop Trick and Mediumistic Stunt one and Two.
All the tricks involving Si Stebbins stack are worth looking into in my opinion just to spawn ideas, especially if you can faro shuffle as it makes it one of the more usable stacks in my opinion (especially when partially memorized as once you’ve learnt the initial 13 card bank it becomes trivial to calculate the exact position of every other card in the deck and visa versa, furthermore the tetradistic nature of the stack means two faros will get every four of a kind grouped together in a order of the initial 13 card bank that you’ve memorized).
As for Royal Road to Card Magic, it will teach you 90% of all the basic sleights in card magic with the exception of the various false display counts. You'll be able to do far more with the knowledge you acquire from that book than Encyclopedia of Card Tricks... in my opinion..
