Post Rule of 4 and 2 Reply with quote
I have a question when calculating pot odds using the rule of 4 and 2.

Say it's after the flop, myself and another player left in the hand, and I have 8 outs with an open ended straight draw. 8 outs X 4 = 32% giving me 2:1. But in reality if I face a bet after the flop in this situation, am given 2:1 to call, make the call, it's very reasonable to believe that I would face a bet on the turn as well if I don't make my straight. Thus making my previous calculation wrong.

Should I be multiplying my outs by 2 instead if I believe I'll be facing a bet on the turn? Can anyone give some insight?

Thanks!

This is why calculating the pot odds with just one card to come(the river) is much simpler. The rule of 4 and 2 is still good to know(for example it is possible for the hand to be checked down from that point forward in which case the 4 and 2 math applies).

Raise the flop, you'll find out how strong his hand is plus you could possibly get a free card on the turn or he may just fold. Also if you just call down and the straight card hits you won't get much money out of him if he's smart. Just my opinion of a good play, i'm not a pro though.

Another idea would be to call the bet, seeing that he's giving odds, should indicate weakness. Then when he checks or bets the turn, I would bet or raise. If he just smooth calls. a small value bet on the river, even if I missed the draw, should scare out bottom or middle pair.

However, I'm just using the above as an example to confirm if 4 or 2 should be used on the flop. I guess it would be, if I expect another bet on the turn, then I'd use 2, and if I didn't expect a bet on the turn, I'd use 4.

I use the rule of 2 and 4 alot when I am playing, and I always just trust the percentages.

If I think I am getting 2:1 on a draw on the flop, using the rule of 2 and 4, then I will call not just to try and hit my draw, but if I am in position and my opponent checks the turn, now I can either check back and try to make the draw OR I can semi-bluff at the pot and try to take it away. If I am faced with a turn bet, I won't call unless the price is very right. With 9 outs, using the rule of 2 and 4, it'd be 18% or almost 4:1.

The rule of 2 and 4 is something I learned from Phil Gordon but I think it's one of the fundamentals of playing poker.

I agree. Phil did a great job explaining it on his dvd and it is very important to understand.

I first read about it in an article Clonie Gowen wrote. Then I think either in a Sklansky Book, or Harrinton on Hold'em. I just watched Phil Gordon's DVD and I thought it explained the basic essentials for someone who's played the game alot, but doesn't understand bet sizes and odds. Etc.

I'm trying to get some of my friends to watch it, as they're mostly too lazy to pick up a book.
