the fact you've been doing chips so long may be the problem.
like most things its a knack, and it might just take your fingers a little more time than you'd hoped to get them into the motion.
keep at it, eventually you'll start to get he hang of it.

with penspinning it's the opposite than with chip tricks. You'll stand the easy chip tricks pretty fast and then it gets harder. When grabbing a pen for the first time, You'll be triing to stand the basic tricks forever and it takes pretty long until you can do those 4 basic tricks. Once you manage to do the sonic, the thumbaround, the charge and nice fingerpasses your skills start to develope very fast. But the basics will tax your patience. So keep up the work.

Yeah through my experience in learning the sonic I came up with about five different methods. It wasn't until I actually saw someone doing it right there in front of me that I realized what I was doing wrong. Well, not wrong, but why mine looked so crappy and his looked absolutely amazing. Unfortunately, I can't really explain it. What I was missing was a "flick" of the middle finger. It bends in, and then ever so sleightly bends back out.
Of course, don't worry too much that. The beauty of it is that all these mistakes eventually led to perfection (well, in my mind anyways).
