The Best Night of Poker. Ever. |
|
I get this PM from a quasi "friend" of mine from a site I used to volunteer for (non-poker related). She says, "I know you play a lot of poker and stuff, but do you usually win?"
I tell her that my successes have been greater than my losses, which at the time had been true as I'd never failed to walk out of a casino with more money than I came in with. (Sadly, fate has since remedied that injustice) She tells me that she is in a bind. With her upcomming nuptials in a week, her and her Fiance` didn't have any money for their honeymoon, but they had a few dollars and asked me if I'd be willing to invest it at the Hold 'em tables for her.
After discussing the potential risk (hell, there ARE no guarantees) and agreeing to my 10% commision on anything I made, we met the following day at my local casino(see avy). Sadly, I failed to inquire as to how much money I was working with and when she handed me a single 50, my heart sank a bit. This was gonna be actual WORK. Ugh. Not a lot of outs for me as I am now forced to sit at either a $2/4 table or a $3/6 table. neither are very appealing as most of you know that everyone calls EVERYTHING. I liken it to playing the lottery. I decided on the $2/4 table more out of selfish reasons than anything else. I wanted to play and I wanted the money to LAST.
My first hand at the table, I am dealt wired hooks. Decent starting hand, but in my experience, it's nearly always the kiss of death due to all the over cards in the deck and in player's hands. Fortunately, I flopped a set and cruised in for the win doubling up my money in the first hand. W00t!
The rest of the night was cream cheese as all I had to do is be patient and just figure out what type of game the rest of the table was playing. It was clear that I really had to work hard to maximize the wins and minimize the losses.
After about an hour, I figured out who the fish were, but more importantly who the real rounders were...that is if you call anyone at a $2/4 table a rounder...When I got my play...wired aces in the hole. Like anyone else, I get excited about aces but truth is I've lost with them far more than I've ever won...and being out of position (small blind) I settle into the full expectation that someone will eventually two-pair my ass or flush me to death. I'm sure most of you know the feeling.
Flop comes Q heart, A spade, and 10 heart. True to my predictions, it would appear that I was going to be flushed upon. I check the bet, and the big blind bets which is called for 4 more postitions when it is is raised. Pretty obvious flush draw, but what ya gonna do? The last three fold and it's back to me and I call it...but big blind re-raises and is called all the way to mister "flush draw" who re-raises, and caps the betting. I have to call because I know I have the best hand at least for one more card. I'm not holding my breath, but you gotta hope, right? Anyways, big blind calls and then we're off to fourth street.
Ace of diamonds. BINGO! I just hit my money card for four aces queen high....and on the turn, no less. Fireworks are going off in my head. Oh happy day! So I have to think quickly in order to maximize the amount of money I can make on this hand. I quickly check. Big blind is almost giggling when he bets. Everyone else folds except for mister Flush draw who raises.
Now I confess, that I have NO idea what my tells are. I have never had anyone video me so that I can study my table behavior. I am really in the dark about my table persona. But what I HAVE done was develop a pretty good sytem of what I like to call "anti-tells"... ways to throw people off on what I might be holding. Anyways, back to the story.
I look at my cards again and make like I'm about to pitch 'em in...when I stop...look at the cards AGAIN and set them down and call the bet. Big blind is openly laughing now (I'm thinking this is a tell ) and re-raises. Of course it's called by Mister Flush and me.
The river graciously reveals a 6 of hearts. In my best effort to look like I'm buying a pot, I bet at it quickly. Big blind re-raises, which Mister Flush simply calls(I guess he remebered that he didn't have the ace of hearts). I re-raise and Big blind reaches for his chips getting ready to come back over the top...but then he stops....looks at me...looks at the community cards...looks back at me and says "You beat me didn't you?" I looked at my last four chips and told him, "I have four more to cover your raise." At this point he is deathly pale. He simply calls as does Flush boy.
Big blind turns over a monster pair of queens for queens over aces. Flush boy turns over a king high flush. I pause and say, "how can I compete with THOSE monsters?" Of course, I'm just stage acting at this point. "Oh, I know...I'll just see how THESE hold up." I show my fist full of aces.
The table litterally gasps! There is a stunned silence from my two victims and the rest of the table erupts in congratulatory praise. All of a sudden, the dealer, who is this pretty and petite Asian girl starts yelling something. Her English is so broken that I am not a little bit concerned when she puts her hand on my shoulder. I am freaked. Was she calling security? Was she calling me a cheat? Again she yells out...this tme more clearly.... "Four aces, queen high!!"
The poker room goes completely quiet, which is some feat for this room. All of a sudden, everyone's eyes glance at something behind me and to the upper left of my head. I look over, and there is this digital clock which is counting backwards. It was showing 2 minutes and 4 seconds. Apparently, whoever holds the highest hand by the time the clock ticks downs gets a jackpot bonus of another $100. Not a lot of money, but hell it's FREE.
I played for another hour and hit a couple of really nice pots and lost a pretty sizable one. All told, I came away with just a little under $600 dollars for my love struck friends who could not believe their fortune. I shrugged it off as if I did this ALL the time. Took my cut ( a paltry $60) and called it a night.

Anti-tells are a neccesary part of my game You can also use them online. Placing a marginal bet on a made hand almost alsways draws aggression. Makes me all warm and fuzzy.

There are two I mentioned in the above article. The picking up your cards and make like you are a bout to pitch 'em. That one has never failed me. Also the tryng to look over eager. No one ever sees that comming. It LOOKS like an act (as it should) and you'll almost always get callers.
Most of the time you can use the obviously known tells as ways to feign weakness...or even strength. When you see a guy make a raise very calmly and then lean back in his chair...it's a sign of confidence. Strength. Use that tactic with a weak hand and you'll watch the seasoned players bow out.

I like the over-confidence one. At games I accompany a friend I snicker when dealt my cards. <--- like that ( cept with a little chuckle.)

Worst beating ever |

Hey great story i'd love to have seen the look of the guy with the queens face.
The only time i have ever hit quads was online at ultimate bet.
I was bb with 88. Table mostly folds and dealer places a small ($5) raise. I call (trying to hit trips). Flop comes 8, 8, A. I quickly check (while coming my pants and the dealer very very quickly raises all in (about $150) i call while jumping around my computer. Turn comes balnk and Then it happened, river turns A spades. Cards get flipped and my quad 8's lose to quad A's i was nearly crying
anyone else got crazy quad stories?

alright.. i got a good 4 of a kind story. I have never gotten this lucky in my life until this . Alright this was about 3 months ago and i was over my friends house. ok i had pocket 5's so i called my blind and 2 others called... Derek and bobby. The flop comes 4 4 5. so i flopped a full boat so i checked it hoping for a bet to come. Bobby checks and derek bets 500,000(this is play money). and i have to call, Bob folds. the turn turns out an ace. i check again and them my friend puts me all in. i call, he turns over pocket fours. Im against a four of a kind w/ one card to come. i wasnt a very happy camper. i thougth my life was over in that game. The river came and, you guessed it, it was a five. I never screamed so loud in my life. i was so excited. i raked in the biggest pot of my poker life. over 3 million in chips. it was the luckiest hand of my life.
