 UCLA vs Portland State - Nov 9 2007 |

Having gone to UCLA, I enjoy watching their basketball games. Using cstv, I watched the season opener versus Portland State on my laptop. I don't know all the names of the Portland State players so the notes are somewhat general on their end.
FIRST HALF
Watching the game on cstv, I was annoyed to hear commercials during
the National Anthem and the player introductions.
Chris Roberts and Don MacLean finally came in.
The yellow C on the UCLA jerseys (signaling 100 championships) doesn't look right.
Aboya controls the opening tip. Portland State gets a steal but they miss on a layup attempt.
Prince misses on a 3:1 but Aboya cleans it up.
Portland State gets hit with a back court violation.
Kevin Love gets an easy slam to make it 4-0.
Love gets a big defensive rebound and on the other end Aboya throws away a pass meant for Love.
Westbrook gets a nice defensive board. Prince misses off the front of the rim but then Portland State loses the board.
Westbrook gets hit w/ a 5 second call on an inbound attempt.
Westbrook gets another defensive rebound and dishes to Shipp who is fouled. Westbrook inbounds to Love for another slam. MacLean notes the change from a 5 second call to a dunk.
The replays on cstv are annoying, they block live play.
Portland State scores on a layup.
Shipp drains a 3 to make it 9-2.
Dominguez misses a 3 and Love gets fouled after pulling down the board.
We have a timeout with 15:43 left in the first half. We hear a budweiser commercial on the audio while the video shows a salute to Tasha Schwikert for gymnastics. The video then promotes men's hoops while we hear a LandCruiser commercial. Someone is heard saying 20 seconds during the audio. Next we hear "5 seconds stand by" and are returned to Roberts and MacLean.
Westbrook brings it across against the zone. Shipp hits another trey making it 2 in a row. MacLean notes that Shipp has to drain 3s and we miss a turnover and a UCLA slam on the video while the replay interrupts live play again. I think cstv should just do away with the replays.
Morrison turns it over. Aboya fees Love for another bucket making it 16-2.
Another replay blocks the action but we hear it is a tomahawk slam from Roberts (don't see it though).
We take another commercial break.
The video comes back but the audio is still on commercials as we see Portland State hit a trey. Dragovic has checked in per Roberts. Westbrook hits a 10 foot bank shot.
Aboya gets called for a foul when trying to steal from Dominguez. Huff gets fouled by Aboya during a trey attempt. MacLean notes that Aboya needs to figure out how to be smart with his fouls. Denote Huff makes it 20-8 after his free throws.
The players now call Dragovic Nic per Roberts. Shipp comes away with a steal and a layup. The replay blocks a steal on the other end.
With 11:41 left in the first half we take another timeout.
22-8 is the score as MacLean notes that the game is brought to us by Corona. Love knocks down a 23 footer on the near left wing.
Huff is blocked as he drives and UCLA eventually gets the ball.
Westbrook brings it up and Love is fouled at the top of the circle.
Stanback checks in for UCLA, replacing Shipp. Roberts notes that both Stanback and Shipp went to Fairfax.
Murray puts up an airball. Westbrook gets called for an offensive foul on the other end.
JR Moore makes a 10 footer for P State.
Nic misses a trey for UCLA. JR Moore gets the long board. Love blocks the Portland State shot out of bounds. Traveling is the call on Lukas and the ball goes to UCLA.
Hamid brings it into the front court for UCLA. Love gets fouled hard during a shot attempt. Roberts notes that Love hits the deck hard. Love shakes it off and goes to the line for 2. Love misses off the back of the rim on the first attempt. The second goes right in for the 85% high school free throw shooter.
26-10 is the score as P State passes the ball around. A trey is missed but P State gets the ball back. Prince misses a 15 footer and Murray grabs the board for P State.
P State misses trey and Nic makes a reverse layup on the other end. The replay blocks live video again so we miss the action on the other end. UCLA has the ball again when the video comes back. Love goes to the line for being hit on the arm during his shot.
We have another timeout with under 8 minutes to go if the first half.
SECOND HALF
36-17 is the score as we start the second half.
MacLean notes that P State was held to 24% shooting in the first half. The Bruin D is just stifling with Love added to the mix.
Dominguez nails a 23 footer for P State but Shipp comes right back with a layup for UCLA.
At 38-20 the replay keeps us from seeing the video again. Finally we're back with P State inbounding the ball. Nic gets fouled pulling down a board.
P State drains a 23 footer and MacLean notes that they are starting to get open looks in the second half.
Shipp loses the ball but then gets hit in the arm. Prince misses a j and Mara comes back with a bucket for P State.
Nic misses a trey but UCLA gets it back. MacLean notes that Nic hasn't been able to knock them down tonight. Prince turns it over.
P State passes around as we hear the UCLA crowd. Prince picks up a foul for the Bruins and Mata checks into the game.
Shipp drains a trey on the right wing.
We miss P State on offense while the replay shows. P State misses a shot and UCLA comes down with it.
Shipp hits yet another trey making him 4/4 from behind the line.
44-25 is the score as we take another break.
Dominguez brings the ball across and gets it in to Morrison who scores for P State.
Westbrook turns it over and Dominguez controls it for P State. Dominguez gets called for an offensive foul as the shot is winding down.
We have another timeout with a score of 44-27.
KTALK AM 1150 is heard on the audio as we come back.
Westbrook gets it into Shipp but it comes back out. Prince travels in the near right corner.
Coston inbounds to Dominguez. Dominguez misses a trey and the ball goes out of bounds to UCLA.
Westbrook dribbles up and passes to Shipp who finally misses a trey. Lucas puts up an air ball from 3.
Love misses a 16 footer and it goes out of bounds as Mata tries to get the board.
Nic checks in prior to P State inbounding the ball. P State misses and UCLA misses coming back the other way. Shipp is tied up under the hoop when trying to the the board. MacLean notes that Westbrook made the wrong decision by not getting the ball back to Shipp.
Westbrook inbounds to Aboya. Shipp almost turns it over but is bailed out. Nic brings it in to Westbrook and it is passed around until Nic misses a trey.
JR Moore gets the board and P State comes back the other way. Coston misses a floater and Love gets the board.
Love has a double-double already with 13 points and 10 boards already!
Love is fouled while making a layup.
11:37 is left in the game as we go to another timeout.
Former Bruin wide receiver Freddie Mitchell is shown on the video.
Most UCLA players are wearing white shoes but Love's are blue.
Love drains the free throw and P State comes back the other way.
JR Moore misses a hook-jumper and Love gets the board.
Love can't convert on the ally-up but it is still UCLA's ball. Aboya misses a 16 footer but Love gets the board and is fouled during the shot.
Love gives UCLA their biggest lead at 49-27 after his free throws.
10:11 is left as Westbrook brings it up. Aboya shoots an airball but Love gets the board and is fouled intentionally during his shot. JR Moore fouls out on the play.
Love hits both free throws and UCLA gets the ball back. Stanback enters the game again with 9:50 left. Stanback misses a jumper and Aboya picks up his 4th foul under the basket.
Huff loses the ball out of bounds but the officials say it was touched by UCLA. Mata comes in for Aboya.
Thomas hits a 17 footer for P State.
MacLean notes that P State only has 29 points with 9 minutes left.
Mata makes a layup on his second effort. The replay prevents us from seeing Westbrook being fouled.
Westbrook makes the first free throw but misses the second.
8:18 is left as Dominguez hits a trey from the far right corner.
Prince comes across the 10 second line and Westbrook is fouled during a shot attempt. Dominguez is charged with the foul.
We go to another timeout with 7:46 left in the game.
Kareem talks about his essay during the audio part of the break.
On the video we see highlights from Bailey's triple double in 1995.
54-32 is the score as we come back. Westbrook makes his first free throw and the second one goes in as well.
Dominguez comes back the other way as a silly "Defense" graphic is shown on the video. UCLA comes back with it and Westbrook is fouled by Thomas while attempting a layup.
56-32 is the score as Westbrook goes to the line. MacLean notes that Westbrook made a good decision on the drive. Westbrook makes both free throws.
Dominguez brings it up for P State as MacLean notes that he will not be surprised to see Westbrook playing in the NBA.
P State drains a trey on the other end.
Stanback makes a 4 footer in the lane and MacLean notes that it is his first bucket as a Bruin.
60-35 is the score as P State is called for travelling. The Vikings now have 18 turnovers at this point.
MacLean speculates as to when the players will be pulled by Howland given the injury situation. Love is fouled during his shot attempt and goes to the line. Julius Thomas is called for the foul making it 9 team fouls for P State.
The Bruins are 13/18 from the Line and Love is 7/9. Love makes both attempts bringing him to 9/11.
P State throws it away but then Shipp gives it back.
Dominguez drains a 22 footer. MacLean notes that Dominguez is a good little point guard (he is listed as 5'6").
Howland calls a timeout.
62-38 is the score with 4:47 left in the game.
Shipp misses a 22 footer and Dominguez brings it up for P State. Dominguez misses a 17 footer and Prince comes back the other way with a slam. The video replay gets in the way of Mata's shot block.
We go to another break with 3:51 left.
Coston misses a trey and then Westbrook misses a shot on the other side.
Dominguez has the ball stolen by Prince but P State gets it back after Aboya makes a bad decision.
Morrison runs over Mata and is called for an offensive foul.
3:03 is left as Hamid and Nic come back for UCLA.
UCLA turns it over on the inbounds.
Polis gets it to Huff who is fouled by Mata. MacLean remarks that Mata does a good job of going straight up.
Huff makes his free throws and Hamid comes up with the ball. Aboya comes down and loses it out of bounds but it was last touched by P State. Mata makes a slam on the inbounds.
Polis brings the ball up for P State. Stanback gets a steal and Mata misses a hook jumper on the other side.
Polis brings it up again and Morrison hits a jump shot.
66-42 is the score as Stanback passes to Aboya who misses a trey badly.
Coston makes a shot as the video is interrupted by U...C...L...A graphics.
MacLean notes that we are a little sloppy here in the late going.
Roberts remarks that we have less than a minute. Morrison makes an impressive follow-up slam.
Nic misses a trey and P State comes across the time line.
Morrison lays it in over the front of the rim.
Hamid dribbles up and eventually hits a trey before the buzzer.
