Actually this is a really good idea, especially for people who don't use editing programs that much.

I've used most of the editing packages that are out there, and the one I keep coming back to is Pure Motion's EditStudio. I started out with version 2, and all my early vidoes and CDs were edited on that. A couple of months ago I bought version 5, and it has made everything just a wee bit faster.
There was no learning curve, since I can use the interface without thinking now, but all the niggling things that were in version 2 have been fixed or incorporated into 5. As I type this I'm compiling the last clip for a new CD on card mucking, and it's taken comparitively little time to put together.
The most important thing to look for if you intend to do some serious editing is a timeline edit facility. Most of the 'basic' packages have a simple 'put the clip here, then the next one' interface (I believe Windows Movie Maker is like this, but I've not looked at it for a couple of years).
There are quite a few free edit suites out there, a google will show you what you have. By and large you get what you pay for, so it's often worth it to pay up for a professional package with good support. I think EditStudio cost me about 50 dollars for the home edition.
Another thing to bear in mind - always capture video using the tool from your capture card. It may be tempting to use the built in tool from your edit app, but you are more likely to get errors and dropped frames.
Take care, Ian
