Volunteering |
|
Hi everyone. It has been about a year since i started practicing magic and i think I am finally getting decent at and I want to do something with it and thought that maybe volunteering at a children's hospital or something would be a good way of doing it. My question is how do I go about doing this? Is there some kind of program I can sign up for that will help me find places?
BTW I am 17 I don't know if age is an issue or not.
Thanks for the help.
O one last thing I feel kind of bad because it seems like all i do is ask questions and never really give advice to peple so if there is some way I can help out on the forum I would be glad to.

This seems like a good idea. Unfortunatelly I don't know much about this. Maybe you should try to contact your local children hospital manager (or someone who might be in charge of this like the PR department). You can try to go there personally but it would be better to arrange a meeting before. I think they will like your idea too. There are some organizations which are doing similiar things.
Your age shouldn't be a problem since you will be volunteering. But you never know...
Don't feel bad that you are asking questions. If nobody did then we would have a quite boring forum

Are you a children's magician? Do you have any experience performing children's magic for children? It's a very different kettle of fish to performing for a family audience or adults, you have to change much of the emphasis of the effect, change the pacing, the presentation and a great deal else. Performing in a children's hospital would I imagine be phenomenally rewarding, however it will also be incredibly difficult. I personally would begin by contacting any local magic clubs as Jeff mentioned, they often either have members who perform for charities or local hospitals or will actually organize performances at local hospitals or charity events, which brings me onto another suggestion - charity events. In the UK there are many fetes and fund raising events were a magician would be more than welcome either to mingle with the crowd and perform close-up magic or something similar, depending on the audience you're used to performing for (adults I imagine, you didn't mention you were a children's performer) these would be more suited to your skills.
One final point, in the United Kingdom we've an extensive network of volunteer bureaus who organize voluntary work and will ask what you'd like to help with or any skills you may have and find you a place doing voluntary work suited to that skill set - these would probably be another good place to ask and would be able to advise you about things like police checks even if they couldn't organize a place.

I haven't actually done anything children specific but I work/volunteer for a rock climbing gym supervising parties for younger kids and I occasionally do some tricks for them. I haven't had any problems so far but i will lok into doing charity events also.
Thanks for the help

Out of interest, what do you perform? What type of magic, at whom is it aimed? There is a lot of magic I think crosses over and can be performed for most people, young children, teenagers and adults. Michael Close's Workers series is full of such effects, it might be worth beginning to add a few of these to your repertoire as they'll stand you in good stead no matter who you're performing for and are damn fine effects too.
Best of luck.

I do pretty much only card tricks as of right now and as far as audiences I have really preformed for that many people outside of friends and family but if I am at a party or something i will do stuff for anyone willing to watch so its not really aimed at any specificaly
