What price should I charge someone for the eight-sided version?

I have someone who wants me to build them one of my table tops and I don't know how much to charge them for it. He just wants me to build it and he will stain and seal it himself.

BTW is anyone here from the San Antonio, Texas area?

1) How much the total materials will cost you, out of pocket

2) How long did it take you to make.

Come up with an hourly rate you want to charge for your handiwork ($15/hr? 20? 10?). Add the two costs, and that's your breakeven point.

So for sure, you will want to sell it for nothing less than this combined value (unless you want to take a "loss"). Anything more is pure profit. Do what feels like a "right" amount of profit for your work (could be $0, could be $100... everyone's different), and that's that.

Good luck man!

That's getting really up there then for that price, Da-Sh.

I built a 8 seater like that and it took a long time. At least 8 hours if you already have all the materials and aren't putting legs on or finishing it.

And the materials that he needs for what he said are around $80 American (just a guess because I'm a total hoser.)

Materials are not that much and I have a machine that will route out the chip wells and cup holders on each side before assembly. All it requires is that I switch out the pieces and then run the path again.

I'm guessing I can do the manufacture and assembly in 4 hours or less.

My first ones were a learning experience. I already have ways to improve certain steps.

I have seen table tops on ebay for $199 that I think mine is probably better. I would be pleased with $199 especially if I don't have to stain and seal it. Might take less, just don't know.

Thanks for your input.

I disagree. If he's going to make a table for someone else (and put both time/effort/materials into that table), then he should get fairly compensated for that. At a minimum, he should break even on costs.

Just be honest when you're talking about prices, and people will understand. Those that don't, well, they just don't understand the word "quality", and they are much better suited to shopping at K-mart for their needs Smile

That's one of the great things about supply/demand. If it costs more to make an item than it will sell for, the item won't get made... and after a while, people will realize that they aren't getting this item that they want, and they will understand that they have to pay more to get it. Well, they may not understand, but at least they'll pay Wink

Im a carpenter by trade. The first rule of thumb as a carpenter is to protect yourself. Make sure you arent setting yourself up for a loss.

Take the price of materials and double that cost, then work up from there. This way if you mess up every piece of material you purchased you are able to buy them all again a not come out of pocket. My time is valueable and I need to be compensated for it. You should too.

ie material = $70 x2 =$140
time 8 hrs @ 10 =$80

total $220

Im planning on building several of the 8' Holdem Tables. I figure I can build them for $150 in material and build 2 in a day ( I dont know for sure) Im planning on charging $300 to $350 for these. The same ones on the net are $400 + shipping of around $100.

Let them know that anything they get on-line needs to be shipped to them which costs money too, sometimes just as much as the item.

Just a cool idea. Since you are making your tables partialy out of wood.. You can buy a personalized branding iron and sign all your tables.

i'd pay about $200 for it...anything less is just dissing you....it looks real nice...i haven't seen it in person but yeah...how's the feel of the playing surface?...that's probably the one thing i'd really look at cuz it's no good if the surface sucks.....even if it's all fancy and whatnot....i wouldn't buy it though cuz i wouldn't wanna pay out my ass for shipping......i'd just build my own or have my buddy build one (the carpenter) Very Happy

I've been thinking about making a hinged one. Two pieces would equal half the size of the finished size. Four pieces would fold up so that it was a quarter of the original size. I think the hinging will take away from the overall appeal of the top and also my weaken the table. When all joints are stiff, they are relatively strong and supported by the fact that the other joints don't move. If I add hinging, I'm afraid the other joints might not be strong enough if it isn't handled carefully. I will handle it carefully, but I cannot speak for the shipper or the person buying it.

I have also thought about making a holdem table in the same style as my six and eight siders.

Not sure if it is worth making though since I don't play those games that much and I can just cover my dining room table with felt and play 10 people no problem.
