De'vo Vom Schattenreich and the Cradle to Grave Project

I first heard about De'vo after Shadow told me about some of the incredible flourishes he is known for. Fortunately De'vo found my site on the net and we exchanged emails. He sent me a copy of his Cradle to Grave Project DVD and I was amazed by it.

Here is some information from the back cover of the dvd:
HANDLORDZ
Cradle to Grave
PROJECT De'vo Vom Schattenreich

De'vo's underground card material has been talked about all over the world. Some of his moves
have become legendary in the world of visual card manipulation. The Cradle to Grave DVD is the
first publicly released product from De'vo. All of his previous material was kept in small circles and
extremely limited. The first run of this DVD was sold out in a matter of weeks and received rave
reviews from around the globe. Step into De'vo's world to experience and learn visual card manipulation
like never before!

-Jeff McBride - Las Vegas Headliner"

"Cradle to Grave is simply incredible." -Daryl.

"Original and 'visually poetic' to watch.
A must-have..."
-Peter Duffie

"If you think you've seen enough with
cards you'll get slapped on your face."
-Kam

"One-of-a-kind flourishes..."
-T.G. Murphy

"Stunning."
-Jerry the Flourishman

"His DVD imparts his passion and
originality like no other..."
-Brad Christian

I've watched the DVD many times and the tricks look good every single time. One of my favorites is the Flipback Vanish. I might put up a video of myself doing the trick. Of course I can't do it as smoothly as De'vo but putting it up would at least give people an idea of how it works.

Xtreme Beginnerz or XB

On July 27th I was pleased to see a Fedex package that had been overnighted from Handlordz. It contained the Xtreme Beginnerz DVD set as well as a signed card from De'vo Vom Schattenreich, Jerry Cestkowski and Q Dawg. The DVD set is loaded with material. I watched it for over an hour the first night and was impressed with the teaching techniques. I liked the Q Dawg section at the end which shows that folks can learn these techniques as long as they stay patient and practice, practice, practice.

XB DVD 1 contains chapters 1,2,4 while XB DVD 2 contains chapters 3,5,credits

Chapter 1 of Xtreme Beginnerz begins with a Things to know section. The dvd explains what is XCM.

Basic card knowledge is reviewed next. It is revealed that tally ho are BEST and they come in blue or red, circle or fan. This is also emphazized in chapter 5 when Jerry is working with Q Dawg. Jerry explains that the tally ho cards don't crimp as easily as Bikes and when they do crimp they go back to normal quicker. Jerry also shows that the fan design on the back of tally ho cards really comes out when multiple cards are seen as once (large fan etc). It is also noted that the surface of tally ho cards is better than the surface of Bicycle cards. That said, Bikes work great too. The viewer is reminded to get rider backs, not jumbo face cards, red or blue. Tactical Bikes are said to be good as well in green or black. In the last chapter with Q Dawg, Jerry explains that tally ho cards are best for performances while Bicycle cards are great for practice. They go on to say that black decks are very popular and a great choice. Viewers are warned to stay away from novelty cards.

It is explained that the sticker on a new deck should be cut instead of peeled. The video demonstrates a nail going across. Removing extra cards like jokers and advertisements is also explained.

Some of the major grips like the dealer's grip, the mechanic's grip and the xcm grip are shown.

It is explained that during performances dropping cards is something that takes place from time to time. The key is to stay upbeat and not panic. It is explained that one card should be used to pick up all the other cards when there are drops. This is because it is best to isolate the dirt on the one card instead of getting it all over the deck.

It is explained that clean nails and manicures are important for performances. A toothbrush is also shown and it is true that cleanliness and appearance are all part of the performance.

Chapter 2 shows the basics and a charlier lesson. The classic charlier cut is also reviewed.

This review is really just the tip of the iceberg. There is a ton of material in this xb dvd set and it is highly recommended for anyone who wants to learn more about xcm.

I know some folks will be searching for this on Google as Extreme Beginners but this is not the right spelling. Likewise Xtreme Beginners is also wrong as is Extreme Beginnerz. That said, folks will get it right if they by it, espcially the X in Extreme. I can only imagine how confusing it must be if someone hears Extreme Beginners on the street and then starts searching for Extreme Beginners online.
