The Royal Road To Card Magic by Jean Hugard and Frederick Braue

The Overhand Shuffle is introduced early in the book. Detailed instructions are given on how to hold the cards.
"Hold your left hand half closed, palm upwards, and place the pack in it, facing downwards,
so that the third phalanx of the index finger is bent against the outer left corner.
The middle and ring fingers, slightly bent, rest against the face of the bottom card; the little finger curls inward so that its side rests against the inner end, and the thumb rests on the top card, its tip near the middle of the outer end." [3-4]

One of the nice things about the overhand shuffle is the fact that it gives the magician control over the cards. Controlling the top card can be very important and detailed instructions are given.
Be sure to check out this trick in the video on the right side of this page.
"1. Holding the deck as explained, lift it with the right hand, and with the left thumb draw off the top card only in the first movement of the shuffle. Without the slightest pause or hesitation shuffle the other cards onto this one until the shuffle has been completed. The top card is now at the bottom of the pack.
2. Again lift the entire pack and repeat the shuffle you have just made down to the last card, which we know was the card originally at the top. Drop this card on top of all the others in the last movement of the shuffle. After a few trials you will find that this last card will cling to the thumb and fingers without any conscious effort on your part." [5]
I like to choose a card like the ace of spades and put it face up on the top of the deck when doing this trick. In this way I can quickly see if I did it correctly by glancing to make sure it is still up top when I am done.
  • I start with the Ace of Spades as the top card on the deck in my left hand.
  • Next I pull all the cards into my right hand except the Ace of Spades (by keeping it in the left hand with my left thumb).
  • Next I shuffle the cards in the right hand back into the left hand on top of the Ace of Spades so that it is the bottom card once all cards are transferred back to my left hand.
  • Next I pull all the cards into my right hand and start putting them back into my left hand from the top down.
  • Once I get to the last card I know it is the Ace of Spades again and it ends up back on top.

  • Another key trick that is introduced early is the Top Card to Next to Bottom and Back to the Top trick. The author gives detailed guidelines on the specifics.
Be sure to check out this trick in the video on the right side of this page. Note that for the video I have the Queen of Hearts on the bottom, unlike the steps below where I have the Ace of Clubs on bottom.
"1. Lift the pack for the shuffle, retaining the top and bottom cards in the left hand as in the preceding sleight. Shuffle the cards in the right hand onto the two cards in the left hand without hesitation. The card originally on the top is now next to the bottom card.
    2. Again lift the pack, retaining the top and bottom cards in the left hand. Shuffle off the cards in the right hand upon the two in the left, allowing the bottom card to fall last, thus returning the top card to its original postion." [7]
  • Again for this trick I start with all the cards in my left hand with the Ace of Spades on top.
  • I like starting the trick with the Ace of Clubs on the bottom.
  • I move all the cards to my right hand except for these 2 aces (the Ace of Spades falls on top of the Ace of Clubs).
  • I then move all the cards in my right hand back into my left hand such that they are on top of these two aces.
  • At this point I know I can show anyone the top card and the bottom card and neither one is the Ace of Spades because it is actually second from the bottom.
  • I then move all the cards into my right hand except for the top card and the bottom card (the Ace of Clubs).
  • At this point I know that the bottom card in my right hand is the Ace of Spades.
  • I start putting the cards in the right hand back into the left hand working from the top down.
  • Once I get to the bottom card on the right hand, I know it is the Ace of Spades and I put it on the top of the cards in my left hand such that it is once again the top card in the deck.
