Practice makes perfect when it comes to poker chip tricks. Often it is difficult to practice during games when you should be focussed on your bets, your opponents, your cards and other factors more important than chip tricks.

Steps For Shuffling Poker Chips

My Shuffle Poker Chip Trick Video page has a nice video that shows how easy it is to shuffle chips repeatedly. Use the video if you want to learn the shuffle trick quickly.

Shuffling chips can be frustrating at first but in time it becomes easy. Starting out, it is easier to learn on a soft surface like a pillow or a couch. When I first started trying the trick I only used 4 or 5 chips on each side. Being right handed, I position my fingers such that the index finger and the middle finger are on the left stack while the ring finger and the pinky are on the right stack. The thumb starts out on the left side of the right stack, lifting it slightly as the stacks are pushed together. Once the lift has been initiated, the thumb slides over to the right side of the right stack to help push the two stacks together. Note that on a soft surface the thumb can stay on the right side of the right stack the entire time because the initial lift can occur by simply pushing the two stacks together.

Once the first few chips fall into place on the bottom, the rest of the chips seem to follow easier as your hand moves up the pile.

One fun exercise is to start with 2 stacks of different color chips. If you shuffle them consistently you can notice certain patterns.

Top Right Merge - Top Right Cut

I put the right stack on top of the left stack such that the bottom left chip is at the bottom of the combined stack while the top right chip is at the top of the combined stack. Once I shuffle the chips together I take the top half and put them on the right, leaving the bottom stack on the left. The shuffle is repeated until the chips are back to the same colors. If I have eight chips in each stack then I get all the same color chips back in the same stacks after 4 shuffles. The list below shows the number of shuffles necessary for stacks of other sizes.
8 poker chips ==> 4 poker chips
7 poker chips ==> 12 poker chips
6 poker chips ==> 10 poker chips
5 poker chips ==> 6 poker chips
4 poker chips ==> 3 poker chips
3 poker chips ==> 4 poker chips
2 poker chips ==> 2 poker chips
1 poker chips ==> 1 poker chips

Top Left Merge - Top Left Cut

5 poker chips ==> 6 poker chips
4 poker chips ==> 3 poker chips
3 poker chips ==> 4 poker chips
2 poker chips ==> 2 poker chips
1 poker chips ==> 1 poker chips

Top Right Merge - Top Left Cut

Put the right chips on top of the left chips while shuffling into one stack. Once shuffled, the top half is put in the left pile while the bottom half stay in the right pile. When the exercise is done in this way the list showing the necessary shuffles for different size stacks is as follows:
10 poker chips ==> 6 (Added Dec 2004)
8 poker chips ==> 4 poker chips
7 poker chips ==> 4 poker chips
6 poker chips ==> 6 poker chips
5 poker chips ==> 5 poker chips
4 poker chips ==> 3 poker chips
3 poker chips ==> 3 poker chips
2 poker chips ==> 2 poker chips
1 poker chips ==> 1 poker chips

5 poker chips ==> 5 poker chips
4 poker chips ==> 3 poker chips
3 poker chips ==> 3 poker chips
2 poker chips ==> 2 poker chips
1 poker chips ==> 1 poker chips

The main thing to remember is that the more you practice shuffling the chips the easier it gets. When I first started with 4 or 5 on each side I thought that was difficult. Now I can do 10 on each side and it keeps getting easier.

For a long time I was stuck at 8 chips on each side but now I can do 10 on each side. When I first started the shuffle my preference was to separate the chips with my ring finger. Now I prefer to separate the chips with my middle finger. The cool thing about the shuffle trick is that the more I practice it, the more I can do it with multiple chips with all kinds of variations.

Shuffle Poker Chips Trick Variations

There are many variations of the shuffle poker chip trick. We have some talented members in our poker chip forum who can do all types of different things with this chip trick. The Poker Chip Trick Video Page has links to all kinds of poker chip trick videos. In the 3 stack shuffle video, Jeremy shows how to shuffle 3 stacks of chips at once. Most people shuffle 2 stacks into each other but Jeremy makes the 3 stack shuffle look easy. I'm not sure how long it took him to learn the shuffle this way but it is quite impressive.

Practicing the Shuffle Poker Chip Trick

The shuffle poker chip trick is hard to practice because you need so many chips. I was playing in an online tournament today for 90 minutes so I practiced the shuffle poker chip trick with my left hand the entire time. I ended up winning the FTR GAUNTLET I: TOURNEY (October 30, 2004) and the session was great for the chip shuffle. I practiced with my 11.5 gram big slick poker chips which are reviews on the 11.5 Gram Big Slick Composite Poker Chip Review page. Two of the videos on the right side of this page were made today with the blue Ace King Big Slick Chips. Practicing during the tournament helped me get better with my left hand where I used the middle finger lift technique. For the 12 chip on each side version I use the ring finger to lift the chips but I'm hoping to do 12 chips on each side with the middle finger lift too.

8, I don't practice it much though

Very Happy

Posted by Asperitas on April 04, 2007 at 03:47

Damn, I totally missed this post so I got to bring it back up, claiming: "hell yeah I can shuffle 34 chips with one hand, and my dick IS bigger than all of yours!"

Posted by LogicalTightRope on March 24, 2007 at 10:04

I've practiced and practiced shuffle the last few days and I've improved to where I can get 8-9 consistently and 10-12 sketchily. I'm a little better than I did in my video now if that tells you anything for whoever watched it.

Posted by royalJBZ on March 22, 2007 at 23:18

you're welcome Very Happy

Posted by LogicalTightRope on March 22, 2007 at 20:31

I use clay-composite chips, just got them recently and I don't have too much experience so i dunno if they're any good. I did recently try varying the angle and I can get 8 sometimes, 6 consistently now. Thanks for all the help royal you gave me a lotta good advice Smile

Posted by royalJBZ on March 22, 2007 at 17:12

try to vary the angle when lifting up the chips stacks with your initiating finger, sometimes that helps. what kind of chips do you use?

Posted by LogicalTightRope on March 22, 2007 at 16:43

_wow i post a lot on this thread_

Yay I can get 5 now on each side semi consistently Confused

Posted by LogicalTightRope on March 22, 2007 at 16:11

Confused I'm trying... I can get 4 on each side sometimes (lol) on soft surfaces. I think if I do it faster it will help I won't give up on it it's just frustrating Mad

Posted by royalJBZ on March 22, 2007 at 16:10

Don't give up, keep on training! I've also had some problems with this trick at the beginning, now I'm doing 14-15 on each side.

Posted by LogicalTightRope on March 22, 2007 at 15:58

I can still barely do 4 I don't know why but I have a natural disability at this trick lol.

Posted by ogot on March 21, 2007 at 18:29

Just started learning the shuffle a week ago, I postponed it on purpose because I couldn't seem to get past 4 when I first started a few months ago, so I left it and moved on to others..

But now I really started practicing it, I noticed that I REALLY had to use my middle finger for support, and that's when I got past 4..

So now I'm on 7 each side for WPT poker chips, moving on to 8 once I can do an entire cycle without thinking about it.. Smile

Posted by Vo_OD00 on March 21, 2007 at 12:27

10 each stack with clay chips. i think Paulson-sized Smile

I can do 12 with each hand at the same time and if im only using 1 hand I can do 13 (just though im struggling) and thats using standard 11.5gram chips

Posted by LogicalTightRope on March 20, 2007 at 21:06

MAN YOU GUYS suck! I can get 50-60 on each side every time! But seriously, I can barely shuffle. I get 5-6 on each side if I'm lucky.

Posted by DanTheMan3 on January 21, 2006 at 09:04

Sounds like it would be a fun time at the Castle. If it wasn't in England I might check it out. Very Happy

Posted by MW on January 20, 2006 at 01:49

Hi thanks for the welcome Smile

Dan the man, I still work in a casino, the cardroom is contained in there. Its very small and its called Castle Casino. I live 500 yards from it too so very convenient Very Happy We hold Texas Hold Em comps nightly, and it s only pot limit and we can only hold 77 players maximum, but it has a great social feel to it. Unfortunatley, as i work in a casino, I can't play poker anywhere in the UK, only online, we can have home games etc but it just aint the same!! Sad

Michael

I met him in my local magic store, probably 3 maybe 4 years ago. He had just been to a lecture in Ipswich, and he was staying with the store owner. I had just seen someone do it the previous day, and thought it was done with thread!! Laughing

We had a little session with the coins. He showed me the technique purely as I was going for my circle audition 6 months later. I practised with two dollar coins glued together to really build the muscle, and when I did it with a 8 or 9gram chip, it nearly hit the ceiling!! Laughing well, not quite.

Was a great afternoon, I didn't stay too long but I'll hopefully see him in February if he's at the Blackpool convention... with a whole host of other greats! Very Happy Get the Shoot and Apollo dvd, great stuff on there.

I used it in the audition.... the rest as they say is history Smile

Mark

Hey, thanks for you help. The instructions on your site were very helpfull. I was able to learn how to shuffle the chips and be able to successfully shuffle stacks of 6 in about 20 mins. Its been about 4 days now and i can shuffle about 10/10, the only problem i have is the chips tend to slide out of the center!! Sad Now have some chips at my computer at all times and just shuffle when i die playing video games!

P.S. ty for your help

Posted by DanTheMan3 on January 19, 2006 at 16:22

Welcome to the forum. Thats pretty impressive MW. What casino did you work in?? What's the name of the cardroom you run?

Posted by MW on January 19, 2006 at 09:36

Hi all

Just found this site while looking for more magic. A little intro?

I don't know a lot about chips, just the general weights, and I'm not a collector, but I've worked in a casino for the last 6 years, and now run a cardroom, so chip tricks are a daily thing!! Smile Love some of the tricks you guys can do, some I havn't seen, but I'll have a crack at them.

I'm also a magician, (trying to go full-time) and included in my chip presentation is the muscle pass, about 2-3feet with a chip, 1 - 2 feet with a dollar coin.(taught to me personally by Shoot Ogawa, that may mean nothing to you!! Laughing )

I've got a video, its linked to putfile, I did it a while ago for a magic forum, its only short, but crank up the speakers!! Just a couple of chip stuff and a little card stuff. (You'll notice when I shuffle 20 I miss the bottom one....doh. Laughing )

http://media.putfile.com/Awesome_Magic

Just to keep the topic up, I can do 13 each side every time, and 14 - 15 if my fingers are feeling limber, and i'm lucky Laughing

Regards
Mark (23 UK)

Posted by DanTheMan3 on January 13, 2006 at 15:51

The most I can do with a high rate of success is 11 on each side. This is when I use my Modern Clay poker chips. With thin cheap plastic chips I can get 13.

WWWWEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!! Laughing Laughing Laughing

Posted by chip magnet on January 05, 2006 at 22:24

Well I can do 2 stacks of 15 but not the greatest. 13 is the highest while doing it comfortably.

Posted by Seano on December 01, 2005 at 20:25

13 is the most ive done, but not with a high success rate. im a small guy and my hands arent ginormous so with a little practice and a little growing i can do more

Using those cheap Cardinal 7.2g chips I can shuffle up to 20 chips, and with the Cardinal 11.5g Dice chips I can do about 16-18. I can also shuffle up to 6 in each hand at the same time.

Yeha but I though we disscussed the fact if it was possible, not if HE did it Smile in that case i agree with you, it is not possible Very Happy

Sreen Cool

Posted by Scooter77 on August 15, 2005 at 14:52

Yes but in his "video" which you cant see anything, i noticed he does put the "32 chip stack" together with one hand...placing it over the whole stack.

Posted by Sreename on August 15, 2005 at 14:49

well since you can actually move your hand up and let the already stacked chips rest I DO think it is possible, although it requires extreme skill and a lil natural help in the way of big hands will help offcourse. I wil try and attempt to get 40 in the upcoming weeks. Ill keep you posted Very Happy

Sreen Cool

Posted by TheEMan on August 15, 2005 at 14:43

thnx Sree

and i have to agree with scooter i think itīs close to impossible to do 20 on each side

Posted by Scooter77 on August 15, 2005 at 14:40

Mathematically your hand would have to be at least 9 inches to even be able to come close to doing 16 on each side. A stack of 32 chips if 4.5 inches, if your hand is going down both sides it must be at least 9 inches. A stack of 40 chips is 5.5 inches high, meaning your hand would have to be 11 inches from tip of middle finger to bottom of palm. Feel free to contibute any thoughts on my math for this one, I just don't find this physically possible.

Posted by Sreename on August 15, 2005 at 14:02

Still nice though Razz

Posted by TheEMan on August 15, 2005 at 14:00

not with one hand though Wink

Posted by Twirlmasterflex on August 15, 2005 at 10:45

the most i have done is 11 on each side and i really dont have the desire to do more especially friggin 20 on each side

Posted by T}{eLaZeR on August 15, 2005 at 08:29

I can get about 13 maybe on each side, but doesn't work out very well...

I can do 10-11 automatic though.

Prodigy how big are your hands...like seriously....measure from the end of your middle finger to the bottom of your palm.

I'm going to attempt to prove this one wrong mathematically.

Posted by Scooter77 on August 14, 2005 at 12:31

I doubt that was 16...maybe 10. From what I can see in the vid your hand still has quite a bit of space between the chips prior to the shuffle, which isn't the case if you were doing 16. If someone feels like proving me wrong go for it, but I still will only believe what I see clearly.
